She departed this life, June 26, 1961, at Holdrege, Nebraska, at the age of 79 years, 4 months, and 18 days. She was converted in early womanhood and joined the Methodist Church later she moved to Huntley Community, Harlan County, Nebraska. She taught Public School in Illinois and Nebraska. She married William Fredrick Skiles on March 22, 1905, living Southeast of Huntley for 26 years. The following 12 years she lived in Huntley. Then, she lived in Holdrege for 18 years, transferring hor (sic) membership to the Holdrege Methodist Church. In her earlier years she was often in her Church. She was a kind, loving and patient mother and wife, willing to help whenever opportunity presented itself. She was always interested in the activities of her family, of the Church and community. Her husband preceded her in death on April 8, 1923. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Albert Sellers, and 5 brothers and 2 sisters, also preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing: one son, Harold Shelton Skiles of Naponee, Nebraska. Four daughters: Mrs. Walter C. (Verona Irene) Allmand, of Holdrege, Nebraska, Mrs. George (Mildred Ella (sic)) Mintzzmyer (sic), of Holdrege, Mrs. Verl (Sylvia Belle) Miller, of Huntley, Nebraska, Mrs. Robert (Ruth Carol) Thompson of Holdrege. She also leaves one brother, Ralph M. Sellers of Minden, Nebraska., 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends. The Rev. H. C. Hoesch officiated, withMrs. Gerald Booth, Soloist and Mrs. James Speece Organist. Pallbearers were: Dick McConnell, Everett Porter, DeWitt Brown, Marion Sellers, Burnell Kaup, and George Oschner. Services were held Thursday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Bainbridge Cemetery, Huntley, Nebraska. The poem by George L. Banks, "What I Live For", portrays her life well. "I live for those who love me, Whose hearts are kind and true; For heaven that smiles above me, And awaits my spirit too; And all human ties that bind me; For the task by God assigned me, For the good that I can do. I live for those who love me, For those who know me true, For the heaven that smiles above me, And awaits my spirit too; For the cause that (illegible) assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, For the good that I can do." Harris Funeral Home of Holdrege, Nebraska were in charge of arrangements. Published in the Harlan County Journal (Alma, NE) Thu, Jun 29, 1961: MRS. MELLE SKILES, FORMER HUNTLEY RESIDENT DIES Mrs. W. Fred ((Melle) Skiles, 79, passed away Monday evening, June 26 at a nursing home in Holdrege following an illness of several months duration. Funeral services will be held from the Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. and burial will be in the Bainbridge cemetery near Huntley. The deceased was a a former resident of the Huntley community, but for the past 18 years had made her home in Holdrege. In later years she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. George Mintzmyer in that city. Survivors include five children, Harold Skiles of Naponee, Mrs. Verl Miller of Huntley, Mrs. Walter Allmand, Mrs. George Mintzmyer and Mrs. R. L. Thompson, all of Holdrege, one brother, Ralph Skiles (sic) of Minden, 10 grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
