Read More	Gaffney Ledger obituary October 20, 2017 Melle Phillips Wood, 90, of 824 Robbs School Road, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Mary Black Health System-Gaffney surrounded by her daughters. Born in Gaffney, S.C. she was the loving wife for 49 years to the late Landrum E. Wood Jr. and the daughter of the late Roy G. Phillips and Mary Robbs Phillips. She was a graduate of Gaffney High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Limestone College and her Masters degree from Winthrop University. She was a retired educator from Cherokee County School District, retiring after 40 years of service. She was a member of SCEA-R, Cherokee Retired Educators and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a dedicated poll worker and even hosted her home as the first voting center for the Woods Precinct. She served as Director of Vacation Bible School at Grassy Pond Baptist Church and New Heights Baptist Church for 40 years, a Sunday School teacher for 60 plus years, a WMU member and former choir member and church pianist. Mrs. Wood was a charter member of New Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Andra Mary Wood and Reverend Debra (Debbie) Elizabeth Wood, both of the home; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great- nephews; and cousins. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Sidney Norton and Dr. Clyde Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to: New Heights Baptist Church, 1367 Pleasant Baptist Church, Gaffney, S.C., 29341. The family will be at the residence.
