Phillips, 49, of route 2, farmer and cotton gin worker, died about 12:05 a.m. Thursday at the Cherokee County Hospital following an illness of five weeks. Interment was in the Grassy Pond cemetery with the Shuford-Hatcher Company, morticians, in charge. The active pallbearers were Jodean, Gerald, Danford and Jack Phillips, O'Neil and Woodrow Hamrick, Olin Bonner and Keith Clary. Fifty-two persons were included in an honorary escort. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Robbs Phillips; a daughter, Mrs. Melle Phillips Wood, of route 4; seven sisters, Mrs. B.W. Humphries, of route 2, Mrs. A.P. Bonner, of route 1; Mrs. Fred G. Hamrick, of route 3, and Mrs. James E. Clary, Mrs. Oris Humphries, Mrs. A.J. Humphries and Mrs. Winfred Humphries, of Gaffney; and four brothers, F.D., and Lloyd Phillips, of route 2, J.D. Phillips, of route 1, and Elmore Phillips, of Gaffney.
