Samuels, August 8, 1961 Melva Rose Dalrymple was the oldest child of Herbert and Marie (Mary) Beck Dalrymple and the oldest grandchild of Hans and Karen Petersen Beck. She was born December 16, 1902 at her parent's home northeast of Simpson. In 1908, the family moved to a farm southwest of Glasco and that fall, Melva started to Columbia school, which was less than a mile west of their home. Melva and her brother went to Columbia for nine years, as the rural school at that time included the 9th grade. She then went to Simpson High School, taking a course in training and graduated in 1922. She taught rural schools in the Simpson community, including Columbia, where she was her cousin's, June Krizek, first teacher. The one-room schools were large, and the teacher had to meet many emergencies, know how to build and bank the fire in the heating stove, maintain discipline and, of course, impart knowledge. She always had to start early in the morning for school, usually a long walk from the home where she had "room and board" in order to have the fire going and the school room warm in time for school to start. On one occasion at Freeman school, she didn't have to start the fire, as a hobo had broken into the school the night before and slept there. He was gone when she arrived but it was a frightening experience. On January 26, 1927 she married Joseph Dean Prickett, who had been in her high school graduating class. They were married in Concordia, KS. They made their home in Simpson, KS where Joe was a carpenter. Patricia Joan Prickett was born August 5, 1931. They were members of the Baptist Church and Melva continued to make use of her teaching experience by teaching Sunday School. Joe has built most of the beautiful homes in the Simpson-Glasco vicinity, as well as more distant places and the high quality of his workmanship is well known. The first home he built was for Melva's uncle, Tom Griffin, in 1925. He built their present home in 1937. Melva has been afflicted with loss of a great degree of her vision, but she has continued to do her work and carry on one of the family traditions - cooking. She is one of the best cooks. --- OBITUARY - GLASCO SUN - GLASCO, KS - FEBRUARY 26, 1970 Mrs. Joe Prickett was born Melva Rose Dalrymple December 16, 1902, the only daughter of Herbert Wesley and Mary Dalrymple, at their home, which is known today as the Wilbur Sam's place. She departed this life February 20, 1970 at the age of 67 years, 2 months, 4 days. Melva, as she was known to all her friends, attended the Simpson schools. She also went to Hays College where she obtained her teachers certificate. She taught school five years. On January 26, 1927, she was united in marriage to Joe Prickett. It was about this time that both of them went into the Simpson Baptist Church where she was active as a Sunday School teacher and in Women's work as long as she could. To this union was born Patricia Joan on August 5, 1932, now Mrs. James F. Thomson of Plainville, KS. Many knew Melva when she was without eyesight for several years. It was a joy to all, but especially her family and loved ones, when after a successful cataract operation in April 1968 she could see again. She saw her grandsons for the first time. She hat attended church many times during those years of blindness but there was something new to rejoice about when she saw all her old friends again. She was looking forward to more enjoyment of life but on February 2, she entered the hospital at Concordia for surgery. Her condition seemed to be improving when she suddenly passed away. Survivors include her husband, Joe, of the home; her daughter, Mrs. James F. Thomson, Plainville; two grandsons, James Joseph and Timothy Ray Thomson; one brother, Jess Dalrymple of Glasco; one nephew, Harold Dalrymple, Austin, TX and many friends and neighbors of Simpson. Funeral services were held February 23 at 10am at Dean Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Robert Molby. Pallbearers were Hollie Prickett, Mike Prickett, Chuck Prickett, George Gentry, Johnny Gentry, and Paul Grittman. Organist, Mrs. Robert Teasley; singers, Mrs. Wilbur Pearson and Mrs. William Siegrist. Burial was in Glasco Cemetery.
