Description	:	Melvin Augustus Parmely, the son of Ellsworth and Rhoda Emeline (Knowlton) Parmely, was born in the state of Missouri in 1843. The family moved to Highland township in Iowa County, Wisconsin, sometime before 1850. Melvin's mother died in 1855 and his father later married Caroline Comfort. On May 8, 1863 Melvin was married to Elizabeth Ferrill, the daughter of James and Mary (Toay) Ferrill, in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Read More	Melvin Augustus Parmely, the son of Ellsworth and Rhoda Emeline (Knowlton) Parmely, was born in the state of Missouri in 1843. The family moved to Highland township in Iowa County, Wisconsin, sometime before 1850. Melvin's mother died in 1855 and his father later married Caroline Comfort. On May 8, 1863 Melvin was married to Elizabeth Ferrill, the daughter of James and Mary (Toay) Ferrill, in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. The next year he began Civil War service with Company "C" of the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee, June 24, 1865. After the war Melvin and Elizabeth farmed and started a family in their home area of Wisconsin. They moved to the Hawkeye area of Fayette County, Iowa, in 1872. Others that made the move and were living nearby were his father, Ellsworth, his half brother Charles Fremont Parmely, his sister Lucy (Parmely) Hull and his brother-in-law Ben Ferrill. Sometime in 1883 or 1884 Melvin and Elizabeth moved for the final time to Pleasant Valley township in the southern part of Hand County, Dakota Territory, with their seven children, James Wilbur, John, Edwin, Minnie, Rhoda, Benjamin, and Arthur. In addition to a homestead, Melvin acquired a "Tree Claim," and a cash entry parcel of land. These totaled four hundred and forty acres. Their farm place was in the north east quarter of section 23 on the west side of what is now state highway 45 (map coordinates: N 44.23322 W 98.98428). By the late 1880s, in addition to that of Melvin and Elizabeth, homesteads of twelve related families were there in the south part of the township. Included were sons John, Edwin, and Arthur; son-in-law Oscar Dearborn and his father Franklin; half-brother Charles Fremont Parmely, his mother Caroline Parmely, his father-in-law Elias Whitney, and his brother-in-law Irving Whitney; Elizabeth's mother Mary T. Ferrill, her sister and brother-in-law Mary and William Coons, and her brother Ben Ferrill. The obituary of Frances (Mrs. Franklin) Dearborn described that south Hand County community like this: "Mrs. Dearborn there saw the extreme hardships of those early pioneers in that the heavy rainfall and luxuriant vegetation of the Eighties, when anything planted in the broken prairie would grow, was followed by the droughts and prairie fires of the Nineties, but she said that these vicissitudes were compensated by the close friendships…" Elizabeth Parmely died September 22, 1908 and Melvin Parmely on September 18, 1910. They are both buried in the G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller, South Dakota.
