Description	:	Melvin C. Treptow, 91, of Pierson passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were held at the Pierson United Methodist Church with The Rev. Bill Cotton officiating. Military rites were conducted at the church by the American Legion Harrison F. Pederson Post 291 of Pierson. Following the funeral service, Melvin's body was donated for research to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in accordance with his wishes and when returned will be buried in the Pierson Cemetery. Melvin C Treptow was born December 6, 1918, the first born son of Chris and Lula (Rehm) Treptow on a farm six miles north of Pierson. His education started in a rural school in Plymouth County, continued at the Kingsley Public School and McKinley School in Sioux City, and he graduated from the Pierson High School before the merger with Kingsley. He continued his education with some short courses at the University of Chicago, Iowa State, Buena Vista University and the school of hard knocks. During his school years, Melvin worked with his dad, Chris, in the Chevrolet garage in Pierson. He also detasseled and processed hybrid seed corn for Milford Beeghly. After high school, Melvin went to work as assistant manager in the lumberyard division of the original Fanners Co-op for the manager, Dewey Forbes. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, rather than wait for the Army draft. His military duty took him to Brazil, South America, the Azores Islands, and on D-Day to the English Channel. His ship ATR-2 and its crew received a Presidential Citation. Melvin received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. His high school sweetheart, Ruth Miller, was waiting for him and they were married at her home church in Rock Branch on October 28, 1945. This union was blessed with two infants, Alan and Marilyn, from the Hillcrest Baby Fold located in Dubuque, Iowa. In 1954, Melvin and Ruth bought a propane company from Daker McQueen which they operated for 30 years, then sold it to the local co-op. It is still a growing business. Melvin retired in 1984. On August 9, 1992, Ruth preceded him in death. Melvin was a charter member of the Pierson Lions Club, and he and Ruth were charter members of the Kingsley-Pierson square dance club. They enjoyed their family and church in that order. Melvin became a member of the Methodist Church in 1928 and continued as a faithful member throughout his life, especially enjoying singing in the choir. On October 9, 1993, Melvin and Marjorie Alderson of Cleghorn, Iowa, were married in Nashua, Iowa. He moved to the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on April 27, 2007. Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Jay Moeller; his granddaughter, JoAnna Moeller; two great-grandsons, Tyler Moeller and Justin Moeller-Johnson; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Betty Treptow of Sioux City, and James and Norma Treptow of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth and Marjorie; son, Alan; his parents, Chris and Lula Treptow; a brother, Russell; and one infant brother, Lloyd.
