He was one of two children in the family. Melvin attended parochial school through the eighth grade and then graduated high school from Tobias in 1947. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 through 1955, spending one of these years in Korea. He was married to Sharon L. Ward of Klemme, Iowa on May 18, 1958 and to them two daughters and one son were born: Theresa, Tina, and Randall. Melvin was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church of Tobias. He was also a 53 year member of the Tobias American Legion Post 311. He farmed and raised pure bred Gelbvieh Cattle. Melvin was proud of his collection of Red Tractors, toy size and real size. In 1993, Melvin and Sharon purchased a home in Daykin, Nebraska, and semi retired until his death. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew Stanley Meyer. Melvin is survived by his wife Sharon of Tobias; daughters Theresa Nadherny and Tina and Larry Mussman all of Geneva, Nebraska; son Randall Meyer of Tobias, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Chad and Kim Mussman of Ohiowa, Nebraska; Nicholas and Melissa Mussman of Ohiowa, Nebraska, Heidi and Kyle Knipplmeier of Eagle, Nebraska, Daniel, Michael, and Brian Nadherny of Milligan, Nebraska; great grandchildren Kade and Bo Knippelmeier of Eagle, Nebraska, Cagney Mussman and Emmett Mussman of Ohiowa, Nebraska; and brother Wayne Meyer, and wife Edith of Hastings, Nebraska.
