He departed this life on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas age the age of 75 years. Melvin was united in marriage to Eula Winslow on October 8, 1959 at Woodston, KS by Melvin’s uncle Loren Silsby. He departed this life on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas age the age of 75 years. Melvin was united in marriage to Eula Winslow on October 8, 1959 at Woodston, KS by Melvin’s uncle Loren Silsby. To this union three children were born: Curtis LeRoy on August 31, 1960; Anita Kay on July 26, 1964 and Lyle Milton on February 2, 1968. Melvin was active in Esbon and Jewell County, he was a 4-H member and later a leader, also he helped sponsor entertainment for the 4-H Fair. He had coached girls softball for a few years when his daughter Anita was playing. He had been a volunteer fireman for 40 years as well as fire chief. Melvin had served on the school board, city council and a Esbon township trustee, and weather watcher. Melvin loved to watch quarter horse races and help get the horses ready to run. He and Eula enjoyed square dancing and playing golf when they could. Melvin would make toys from welding rods and horse shoe nails as a hobby when his health permitted. He is preceded in death by his parents and oldest sister Merla Hulbert. Survivors include his wife Eula of Esbon, KS; sons: Curtis Silsby and wife Debra of Smith Center, KS; Lyle Silsby and wife Julie of Canton, KS; daughter Anita Silsby of Denver, CO; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; sister Earlene (Orren) Bronson of Smith Center, KS; 5 nephews and their families. Also Melvin had been adopted for a dad and grandfather by Susan and her four daughters and grandchildren. A host of other cousins and friends and his Aunt Donna Hoffhines of Fair Grove, MO and Aunt Lolita Silsby of Beloit, KS. He will be dearly missed all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held this Monday 2:00 PM, January 19,2015 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Red Cloud, Nebraska. Pastor Glenn Charles Fogo will be officiating. Burial will be held in the Esbon City Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
