Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 10 at Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, South Dakota. Rev. Steve Martens will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Melvin Henry Nielsen was born September 9, 1914, on a farm in Union County, South Dakota, the youngest of seven children to Niels and Sina (Johnson) Nielsen. When he was five months old, he moved with his family to the family farm in Union County. Melvin lived on that same farm for over 90 years. He was baptized and confirmed at Brule Creek Lutheran Church. Melvin attended Pleasant Ridge Country school in Union County, South Dakota. After his schooling, he assisted his father in farming. He was united in marriage to Lois Mc Corkell on February 16, 1939, at Rosini Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, South Dakota. Together, they are the parents of five sons, Jerry, Merlin, Norman, Roger, and Loren. Melvin and Lois lived together on the farm for over 71 years until moving to Akron. Melvin was a lifelong member of Brule Creek Lutheran Church. After retiring, he took up gardening and restoring furniture. He also enjoyed throwing horseshoes, golfing, bowling, hunting, and playing cards with friends. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife of over 76 years, Lois of Akron; his sons: Merlin Nielsen (special friend, Bev) of Madison, SD, Norman (Elvira) Nielsen of Le Mars, Roger Nielsen (special friend, Denice) of Akron, and Loren (Nancy) Nielsen of Akron; 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son and daughter in law: Jerry and Martha Nielsen; great grandson: John Stanage; three brothers: Roy, Howard, and Ralph in infancy; and three sisters: Eva Kjose, Julia Kjose, and Elvina Hinde.
