Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, October 21, 1993; pg. 10 Melvin Henry Smidt, one of five children born of Klaus J. and Leona (Beyke) Smidt, was born in Superior, Nebraska, April 3, 1947, and passed away Tuesday, October 19, 1993, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska. Melvin grew up in Superior where he received his formal education. He served his country in the United States Army through the Viet Nam Conflict. Melvin spent most of his adult life working with his father and brothers, Marvin and Gilbert, in the construction business. On July 21, 1973, in the Federated Church of Sutton, Nebraska, Melvin and Jean Ann (Schwab) Smidt were married and were blessed with four children. Jean passed away on May 2, 1985. On February 15, 1992, he was united in marriage to Janice Andersen. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Superior Jaycees, the Superior V.F.W. and American Legion, Superior Elks and Eagles, the Superior Volunteer Fire Department (in 1984 was Fireman of the Year) and EMT Squad and was a past CPR instructor. Melvin enjoyed being outdoors, watching wildlife and gardening. He was very talented with his hands and wood working. Melvin was preceded in death by his father, his first wife Jean and an infant brothers. Survivors include his mother, Leona; his wife, Janice; four children, Gregg J. Smidt, Kevin R. Smidt, Marcie J. Smidt and Blake H. Smidt; two brothers, Gilbert and his wife DeEtte and his identical twin Marvin and his wife Marietta, all of Superior; his sister, Linda Mazour and her husband Raymond of Blue Hill, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends. Rosary will be Thursday evening at 7 o'clock from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 22, 1993, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Superior with Father Frank Machovec officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements.
