Mr. Langer was born March 31, 1930, at Pierz, Minn., to Peter A. and Frederica (Glaser) Langer. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Eva of Spalding; four children and their spouses, Sharon and John Bopp of Grand Island, Shirley and Tom McDonnel of Maumelle, Ark., Tom and Angie Langer of Spalding and Jackie and Scott Voichoskie of Fullerton; a son-in-law, Ken Hiner of Grinnell, Iowa; and two sisters, Eileen Bauer and Leona Schmidt, both of Spalding. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Lauren and Bopp, Mark and Sam McDonnel, Aaron and Stacy McDonnel, Stacyi and Matt Wesolowski, Hannah and Erik Bebb, Miranda and Marissa Langer, Jaylie and Jeran Bentz, Alex and Sydnie Voichoskie; eight great-grandchildren, Alexander Bopp, Griffin Oates, Clark and Anna McDonnel, Triston and Zoey Wesolowski, Abigail Bebb and Sarah Bentz; a sister-in-law, Helen Langer of Spalding; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lori Hiner; a brother, Ambrose Langer; and an infant sister, Evelyn. Melvin moved to Spalding with his family in 1931. He attended Greeley County School District 10 and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1949. On Dec. 4, 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean War while stationed in England until his honorable discharge on Jan. 13, 1954. He returned to Spalding, where he farmed with his father. Melvin married Eva M. Dresch on Sept. 5, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Primrose. The couple made their home on a farm near Spalding, where Melvin continued farming. They were blessed with five children: Sharon, Shirley, Lori, Tom and Jackie. Melvin retired from farming in 2011 and continued living on the farm until April 2014, when he entered the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Spalding. He enjoyed nature, woodworking, hunting, fishing and playing music on his accordion and harmonica.
