He graduated from Adams High School in 1935 and from Peru State College in 1941 with a degree in industrial arts and commerce. He taught school in Hamlin, KS before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 on a cargo ship and oil tanker. Read More	Melvin P. Gottula, 100, of Adams died in a Lincoln hospital on Friday, September 16, 2016. He was born April 1, 1916 at Steinauer. He graduated from Adams High School in 1935 and from Peru State College in 1941 with a degree in industrial arts and commerce. He taught school in Hamlin, KS before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 on a cargo ship and oil tanker. Following his discharge he worked for Bechtel Corporation in Saudi Arabia as a warehouse manager for several years before returning to the United States in 1952. He worked for Northern Natural Gas before becoming the bookkeeper for Hoskins and Associates Consulting in Lincoln from 1954-1983. Following his retirement from Hoskins he enjoyed raising hogs. He married Hilda Alms on February 2, 1964 in York and they lived in Adams. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Adams and the Adams VFW Post #10042. He liked reading, watching Husker football and spending time with his family. Survivors include his daughter, Jan Vanderbeek and husband Dan of Adams; two granddaughters, Jaycie Vanderbeek and significant other, Adam Sekora of Lincoln and Jenna Lempka and husband Dylan of Adams; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Gottula of Fremont; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lola Sieber Gottula, his wife Hilda, who died August 25, 2001, his son Stuart, who died July 26, 1988, six brothers, Orville, Clarence, Elmer, Omar, Robert and Lloyd, and two sisters, Isabelle Block and Donnabelle Goss. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the United Methodist Church of Adams with Rev. Rob Clark officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery of Adams with military rites conducted by the Adams VFW Post #10042. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Friday in the fellowship room at the church. A memorial has been established to the family’s choice. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Adams on Thursday from 8:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. A guestbook for signatures and messages of condolence is available online at www.foxfuneralhome.net. Fox Funeral Home of Adams is in charge of the arrangements.
