Mrs. Rice had been in failing health for some time, but the immediate cause of her death was due to complications following an attack of pneumonia. Melvina Slater was born July 26, 1851 in Cedar county, Iowa, near the town of Wilton. She was united in marriage to Francis M. Edge December 31, 1871, at which time they took up their residence in Saunders county, Nebraska, where they remained for about 2 years, returning to Cedar county, Iowa where they lived but a short time when Mr. Edge took sick and passed away September 22, 1875. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter. On June 22, 1880, she was united in marriage to Samuel S. Rice, also a native of Cedar county, and they resided there until about 13 years ago, when they moved to Denison, residing here continuously since that time. This union was blessed with five children, two sons and three daughters. Mrs. Rice was an affectionate wife and mother, and early in life accepted Christ as her savior and united with the Christian church of Lime City, Iowa. Later she transferred her membership to the Trinity Reformed church of Wilton, Iowa, and upon coming to Denison, attended services more regularly at the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Rice was a faithful member of the Woman's Relief Corp. and actively engaged in the affairs of that organization. She leaves to mourn her death her devoted husband and the following children: Mrs. T.J. Highly, Tipton; H.M. Edge, Marathon, NY; Mrs. Lee Winn, Denison; Mrs. O.O. Ford, Wilton; B.F. Rice, Conway Springs, Kans.; Myron Rice, Deloit; Miss Florence Rice, Davenport. She also leaves three sisters and three brothers, namely: Mrs. Mary E. Phipps, Hobert, Ind., Mrs. C.M. Passmore, Murray, Ia., Mrs. Malinda Hain, Sidney, Neb., J.T. Slater, Denison, T.A. Slater, Wilton, and I.M. Slater, Moscow. In addition she leaves 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church in charge of the Relief Corp. Rev. Fulcomer, the pastor, delivered a brief address. Interment was made in Oakland cemetery.
