Description	:	Merl B. Peek, age 99, passed away on October 17, 2013 in Waconia, Minnesota. He was born on April 2, 1914 in Tecumseh, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Effa (Bicknell) Peek. He was born on April 2, 1914 in Tecumseh, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Effa (Bicknell) Peek. On February 6, 1943 he married Carol Jean Wherry. That union was blessed with three children and lasted more than 60 years. A graduate of Peru (NE) State College and Georgetown University Law School, Merl was a high school teacher and coach in Nebraska, Iowa, and Colorado before serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked as an Administrative Assistant to Sen. Kenneth Wherry (R-NE) in Washington D.C. (1946-48), for the National Reclamation Association (1948-51), and was an attorney with the Office of the Chief Counsel of the I.R.S. (1951-55). In 1955 he joined the Legal Department of UOP Inc. in Des Plaines, IL, became Secretary of the Corporation in 1966. He also was a member of the UOP Board of Directors before retiring in 1979. In retirement, Merl was actively involved in the various communities in which he lived. He chaired the Community Coordinating Council in Green Valley, AZ; helped develop a program for at-risk students called "Youth on Their Own" in Tucson, AZ; and chaired the Employee Scholarship Fund Committee at the Forum at Desert Harbor in Peoria, AZ. For the past five years, Merl lived at the Lighthouse at Waconia (MN), where he was much loved and respected by staff and residents alike. Merl had a strong Christian faith and was actively involved in a number of Presbyterian churches throughout his life. He was also an athlete, musician, and lifelong student of history and current events. Merl was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carol Jean. He is survived by his children: son Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Peek of New York City, daughter Elizabeth Hays of New York City, and daughter Emery (Paul) Kling of Watertown, MN; grandchildren: Andrew Peek, Katherine Peek, Hilary Peek, Connor Hays, Matthew Hays, Mallory (Traivis) Dykema, Nathaniel Kling, Garrett Kling, Reese Kling; great grandchildren Harlow and Imogene Dykema. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska with Reverend Paul Kling officiating. Visitation on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from Noon to 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Wherry Mortuary, Pawnee City Nebraska. Interment at the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
