Merle was born to Charles M. and Lydia C. (Struckmeyer) Fryrear on December 6, 1913 in Clatonia, NE. Merle was the third son of Charles and Lydia. The Fryrear family came to Colorado in March of 1918. Their home place was located nine miles south and two miles west of Paoli. Merle grew up learning to love to work the soil and raise animals. Merle Fryrear was united in marriage to Genevieve Ardell Thompson, who is known as Jo. They were married in 1937 at the parsonage in Paoli. At that time, Merle was working on the road, hauling gravel with a team of horses and a gravel wagon. Merle and Jo rented a farm two miles west and a mile north of the home place. They became parents of a son, Max Dennis, on July 2, 1939. Because Merle's brother, Charles, had to go into military service, Merle and his family moved back to the home place to care for it while Charles was in the service. Their daughter, Sharon Faye, was born December 30, 1943. When Charles returned to the farm after completing his service in the military, Merle and Jo bought a farm which became the home place for their family. Merle was content to farm and to raise cattle, hogs, and chickens. He joined the Wages Methodist Church when his children were baptized. He served as an usher and church treasurer for many years, and he helped with the remodeling of the church building twice during his membership there. Merle served on the school borad for the McKelvey School District where his children attended elementary school, and he was a director on the Paoli Elevator board during his years of farming. Merle thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed it when they spent time at the farm. During the last three years of his life, the loving attention of his great-granddaughter who lived nearby was very important to Merle. Following his retirement from farming, Merle and Jo moved into Holyoke. One of his hobbies was building things and he was known to say that he liked "making something out of nothing." He also enjoyed playing cards and listening to or watching baseball games. Because of his great love of the land, Merle was always interested in farming, even after he became ill. When he moved to Holyoke, Mr. Fryrear became a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a member of that church for the remainder of his life. Merle H. Fryrear was preceded in death by an infant sister Pearl Fryrear; his parents; and two brothers, Melvin and Charles Fryrear. Survivors include his wife of nearly 63 years, Genevieve ("Jo") Fryrear of Holyoke; brother Willie Fryrear and wife Majorie of Holyoke; son Max and wife Candace of Oswego, IL; daughter Sharon Hergenreter and husband Stanley of Denver; grandchildren Jerry M. Fryrear, Gary Fryrear and wife Patti, Michael Fryrear and wife Kathryn, Melinda Fryrear Thomas and husband David, and Sara Jo and Kyle Hergenreter; great-grandchildren Dakota, Makalah, Madison and Kirk Fryrear and Carrie Louise, Matthew and Ryan Thomas; a very special friend Kimiko Sutherland; sister-in-law Cleo Fryrear; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Merle Hayward Fryrear were held on Wednesday, February 23 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Darrell Dennis officiating. Interment followed at Holyoke Memorial Park.
