Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Litchfield Christian Church in Litchfield. Rev. Ken Woolery and Greg Swinney will officiate. Merle Ruth was born January 19, 1914 to Clarence and Mary (Jones) Wing. She was their first child. They lived in the Sartoria area between Pleasanton and Litchfield. She attended country schools and boarded in Litchfield for her high school years. She graduated with the class of 1931. She taught rural schools for several years. Merle married a neighbor, John J. Cherry on February 5, 1935. They farmed in the Sartoria area for several years and then moved to a farm five miles north of Litchfield. In 1944 they moved a mile south and ½ mile east to their present farm where they resided the rest of their lives. Merle was able to stay on the farm with her dimming eyesight, because her oldest daughter lived with her and cared for her for the last several years. Merle was active in the Litchfield Christian Church as a piano player, along with her husband, John who played the organ. She was a Sunday School teacher and helped with VBS and Pibel Bible Camp. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Shermanette Garden Club for a number of years. The couple made numerous trips in their camper. Merle always had a beautiful yard of flowers. She raised many varieties and grew them all around the farmstead. She took many bouquets to church. She also did a lot of gardening. For many years she had a huge strawberry patch and made delicious strawberry pies. She also made a lot of homemade whole wheat rolls. She was also known as the family historian and made many books with pictures and a written history of the family generations and made copies for all the family. She also kept a daily diary for most of her married years. She celebrated her 100th birthday with an open house last January. She celebrated her 100 ½ birthday by riding on a float in the Litchfield’s Old Settlers Picnic parade. She was preceded in death by her husband, John after 68 years of marriage, brothers, Ross Wing and Dean Wing, sister, Mary Alice Heapy and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Arnold.
