Merlin (Mel or Mert) was born in Blue Rapids, Kansas, on July 21, 1929, to Charles O. and Freda (Behrens) Butler. He graduated from high school in Marysville, Kansas, and began his lifelong career with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1947 at the age of 18. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 2004; an infant son; an infant daughter; son, Randy; two sisters, Lilly and Rita; and brother, David. He is survived by Mike (Marcia) Butler of Ogallala; grandson, Scott of New York; sister, Doris; two brothers, Charles and Steve; and numerous nieces and nephews. Inurnment will be at 11 a.m. on June 3, 2016, at Ash Hollow Cemetery.
