Merritt ran off with his brothers wife Mary Ann Lyons Young (Erasmus Youngs wife) in 1856. They left New York and lived in Putnam county, Missouri, until her death in 1857 from suicide. To this union a child named Sarah was born in 1856. Merritt and Mary Ann bought and sold property in Putnam county, MO. Merritt and Erasmus never made up as brothers. His only contact was with a nephew from Michigan (Benjamin Rush Young (JR)) from a deceased brother. The letters of their writings still exist. Merritt had an excellent education and came from a family with means. Had he stayed in New York his future would have been quite different. He was a Civil War soldier. He was often referred to as Major in the Allerton newspaper. He never was a Major in the military. (He was a musician.) He got the nick name by his ability to apply for and get pensions for other Civil War soldiers. (He was well educated.)After the war he was a janitor in the same school that he once taught in. He was left disabled from the war. Two of his 3 daughters from Rebecca were crippled during their life time. Merritt's real last name was spelled Youngs.
