Description	:	Merritt Norton Blanchard was born near Masonville, in Fremont township, Buchanan county, Iowa, May 27, 1867, and grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birthplace. Later he went to the western part of the state and lived for two or three years near Gault, Wright county. From there he went to Galesburg, Illinois, where he found employment in a store. Read More	Merritt Norton Blanchard was born near Masonville, in Fremont township, Buchanan county, Iowa, May 27, 1867, and grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birthplace. Later he went to the western part of the state and lived for two or three years near Gault, Wright county. From there he went to Galesburg, Illinois, where he found employment in a store. After a short residence in Illinois, in the fall of 1895, he came back to Masonville. He was married on July 4th, 1906, to Bertha E. Houghton. They lived in Masonville until two years ago, when Mr. Blanchard purchased a home in Winthrop and they took up their residence at that place. For some months his health gradually failed, notwithstanding the care of his now bereaved wife and the best medical skill obtainable, and on Sunday morning, February 25, 1912, he passed away, at the age of 44 years., 8 months and 29 days. He leaves to mourn for him, besides his wife his aged mother and two brothers, Clarence and Delbert of Masonville, and a large circle of distant relatives and friends. His father and two other brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Blanchard had been a Christian man for many years, and his character bore witness to the reality of his faith and experience. He united with the Congregational church in Masonville at its organization and after its discontinuance, when he returned from Illinois, he joined the Wesleyan Methodist church. Upon gong to Winthrop he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, being faithful to the last. Mr. Blanchard had many friends in Winthrop who have seen with regret the slow but certain fading of his health, and their sympathy goes out to the sorrowing ones he has left. A brief funeral service was held at the home in Winthrop on Tuesday morning, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. S. C. Bretnall, and the remains were taken to Masonville, where another service was held in the Methodist church, the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Perry, assisting in the service.
