Mr. Blanchard sustained a stroke of paralysis some time ago, and had since been in failing health. The funeral, which was very largely attended, was held from the residence yesterday. Mr. Blanchard was born in Herkimer county, New York, September 20, 1829 and came to Delaware county in 1856, settling on a farm just over the line in Buchanan county where he lived until his advanced years and failing strength bade him retire from the active duties of life and leave the labor he once performed with alacrity to his sons, while he chose for himself and wife a quiet little home of a few acres at Masonville, where he spent happily his later years and where he peacefully fell asleep, surrounded by his family, with his reasoning faculties unimpaired and conscious to the last. Mr. Blanchard, for a helpmeet and companion, chose Miss Amelia Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haven Nelson of Coffin's Grove, who, with their four sons, Howard, Clarence, Merritt and Delbert, is left to mourn. Their first-born was laid away in earlier years. Mr. Blanchard was of English parentage, possessed of an indomitable will and energy, firm in what his judgment told him was right, never wavering from what he felt to be his duty, however much he might be criticised (sic). He was a Christian known and read of all men, and while of course he was not without censure from some, as such strength of character never is, the world would be blest to have more such men. He was a kind husband and father, an exemplary neighbor, true friend, and loving brother. Mrs. Morris Herrington is his sister, coming to Iowa with him. She was married to Mr. Herrington in Dubuque, and is still living on the farm adjoining that of her brother, where they started life in the early '50s. We lose from among us by the death of Mr. Blanchard a good man. The members of the family wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses in this hour of affliction. History of Buchanan County, Iowa, 1881: "Samuel Blanchard was born in Herkimer county, New York, in 1829. He has always been a farmer. In 1855 he came to this county and entered one hundred and twenty acres of land at Government price, in the southeastern part of Fremont township, where he resides. The place was wild, and wolves and other animals were plenty. Mr. Blanchard was among the earliest settlers of this township, and experienced many of the hardships of a pioneer. He has succeeded in building up a comfortable and pleasant home. He has a good house, a part of it built in 1858, and the remainder in 1869. He has also a fine barn, thirty by fifty-six feet. There is also an orchard and a fine grove of maples, affording excellent shelter from the winds. Mr. Blanchard was married in 1856 to Miss Amelia Nelson, who was born in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania in 1837. Their children are: Auldice M., born November 9, 1857, died February 23, 1863; Elmer Howard, born April 25, 1861; Clarence, born April 20, 1863; Merritt N., born May 27, 1867; Delbert S. born March 22, 1870. Mr. Blanchard is a good, sound Republican. His is a fine family, and highly respected. He is one of Buchanan's old settlers and one of its solid men to-day."
