Mervin was born in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, August 25, 1931, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Barrett. He was a 10th grade student at High School. His parents and 12 sisters and brothers survive. The family was moving to the Nova L. farm near Talmage when the accident happened. IN A TRUCK FALL MERVIN BARRETT IS BRUSHED FROM TOP OF FURNITURE LOAD Mervin Barrett, 14 year old Nebraska City, Nebraska school boy, was instantly killed shortly before noon Wednesday north of Talmage, when he was struck on the head by the superstructure of the bridge across the old Nemaha. Barrett was riding atop a load of furniture in a truck being driven by his brother, Bernard, Nebraska City. The Barrett family, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Barrett and those of their children who live at home, were moving from here to the Novak farm west of Talmage. Mervin rode atop the load of furniture to keep an eye on it during the trip. He was facing to the rear. The truck had passes almost entirely across the bridge when Melvin's head was struck by the crosspiece near the top of the superstructure. The youth's head was crushed and he plunged to the bridge floor. The boy's brother kept on driving, didn't miss the youth until he got to the destination west of Talmage with the load. Meantime, the first autoist to arrive at the scene was John Peterson, who lives west of Lorton. He drove up from the south, noticed the boy on the bridge, and called to a railroad gang working nearby. The notified Talmage Marshal Lynn Howe. L. W. Ross and Vilas C. Ketelhutt, of Nehawka, were loading grain at the Jueckel farm near by. They heard a sound made apparently when the boy fell, but their investigation in the corn crib and near where they were working revealed nothing. They drove toward Talmage, however and were the first to come on the bridge from the north. Shortly after they arrived, the boy's father, H. J. Barrett, came along with a truck load of farm implements. He remained at the side of his son's body until the ambulance arrived several hours later. "It is just an accident," he said "and there is nothing we can do about it now." County Attorney B. M. Spencer and Sheriff Carl Ryder, who arrived at the scene within 30 minutes after the accident, termed it an accident. They gave permission to move the boy's body from the center of the bridge roadway and remained at the scene until the Porter ambulance arrived from Nebraska City. The accident victim was one of 13 children in the Barrett family. He is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Barrett, and these brothers and sisters, Virginia, Catherine, Junior, Eldon, Norman, Ronnie, Delbert, who recently returned from the service, Thelma Womack, Betty Jean, and Donald, and Dale in service, Donnie is in Denver, and Dale is overseas.
