Description	:	Donald Paul Barrett,90, of Salinas passed peacefully on to heaven on September 29, 2017 after a 3 year battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on June 27, 1927 in Silver City, Iowa to Hiley and Ethel Barrett. He was one of 13 children. At a young age the family moved from Iowa to Nebraska City, Nebraska to the family farm. He was born on June 27, 1927 in Silver City, Iowa to Hiley and Ethel Barrett. He was one of 13 children. At a young age the family moved from Iowa to Nebraska City, Nebraska to the family farm. Donald only completed 8th grade as his family needed him to work full time on the farm. At the age of 17, Donald enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines and Air Force. His tour of duty took him to memorable places that he often spoke of such as Hawaii and Germany. In 1946 as he was headed home to Nebraska for a visit via Greyhound Bus he had a chance meeting with his future wife, Penny. She was headed home to Colorado. They got off the bus and promised to stay in touch. After only 2 dates, they decided to get married. On July 3, 1946 in Rocky Ford Colorado, they said their vows in a small ceremony with just their parents in attendance. In 1956, Donald and Penny and their 3 children, Steven, Diana and Randy, moved from Nebraska to Salinas, California. Donald began working at Steitz Buick (later Harvest Buick) as the tow truck driver and service mechanic. He worked there and drove the tow truck until his retirement in 1996 to care for an ailing Penny. He loved cars and owned more than he could count over the years. He and Penny loved to travel in their RV’s. They went all over California and camped and went out to Nebraska and Colorado several times to visit family. Don and Penny adored each other, their children and grandchildren. Their marriage of 62 years was that of what love stories are made of. Their love and devotion to each other was an example to their family and all that knew them. When Penny passed in 2008, a part of Don was gone with her. He missed her to no end these last 9 years. Even as the Alzheimer’s stole his memories, at his moments of clarity he asked and longed for his beloved Penny. They are reunited now, and we as a family are thankful for that. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive “Penny” Barrett (2008), his parents Hiley and Ethel, 7 brothers, 4 sisters, and many brothers and sisters in-laws that he was very close to. Donald is survived by his children and their spouses; Donald Steven Barrett (Rita), Diana Fryou (Mike) and Randy Barrett(Cheryl). His 9 grandchildren; Donovan Barrett, Stefanie Blihovde, Ryan Barrett, Nicole Barrett, Jennifer Hood, Sean Barrett, Joshua Fryou, Nicholas Fryou and Daniel Fryou. His 6 great grandchildren; Dannielle Barrett, Andrew Strange, Julian Barrett, Riley, Madison and Kaden Hood, Whitney Fryou. One great great granddaughter, Aurora Conover. His brother Ron Barrett (Regina) and many many nieces and nephews. Memorial Services with Military Honors will be held at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas on October 4, 2107 at 1pm. There will be no graveside services. In lieu of flowers that family requests that donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://act.alz.org/site/Donation2?df_id=32112&32112.donation=form1&. “In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still.
