E. died at 2:50 a.m., today, Friday in St. John’s Hospital. His death followed a severe stroke suffered a week ago. His wife died last Saturday at the age of 78 and funeral services were held Tuesday for her. Stevens was familiarly known in Huron to older and younger residents as “Santa Claus,” for he and his wife for many years distributed Christmas treats to the children of the city. He was born Feb. 18, 1866 at Springfield, Mo. His mother died when he was an infant and he was brought up in the home of an uncle in Iowa City, Ia. He came to Letcher, S. D., at the age of 14 from Sioux City, Ia. His marriage to Ellen Ford took place October 20, 1896. He taught school for a time and was in the hardware business at Letcher for a while. In 1906, they moved to Seneca, S. D., where he was in the banking and real estate business. In 1914 he moved to Beadle County and Huron at which time he became engaged in farming and livestock raising northwest of here, and this had since been his home. Surviving are two sons and four daughters. The sons are: Wilfred of Huron and Russell of Collinsville, Ill.; and the daughters: Mrs. Roy Seeman and Mrs. C. A. Johnson, Huron: Mrs. Guy Ulman of Mankato, Minn., and Mrs. Wilford Martin of Lang Beach, Calif., and a niece, Mrs. Ross Williams of Mayer, Ariz. The body is at the Welter Chapel. Friends may call there Saturday and Sunday evenings between 7 and 9 p. m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Monday at St. Martin’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Martin O’Connor in charge. Rosary will be said in St. Martin’s Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday evenings.
