Thurs., Dec. 14, 1939 (pg 1) MF 071.8254, BAT Reel # 16, Norfolk Public Library --MICHAEL HALPIN PASSES--Pioneer Battle Creek Homesteader, 96, Dies at Pierce. -- An Honored Son of Old Ireland-- Michael HALPIN, 96, pioneer Battle Creek homesteader and widely known throughout this section of Nebraska, died Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. O. Schramm, in Pierce. He had made his home with his daughter since the death of his wife eight years ago. Cause of death was complications resulting from advanced age, and though physically incapacitated for several months, remained mentally alert to the end. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning in Sacred Heart church, Norfolk, by Rev. Robert Burns, pastor, and Rev. Emil Zeph, pastor of the Pierce Catholic church. Burial was made in the family lot at Prospect Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were Clifford Olson and Stephen Schramm of Amelia, Leo Lauver, Madison, Don Lauver, Battle Creek, all grandsons, and Pat Smith and Charles Seiffert of Battle Creek. Born at Callan, Kilkenny, Ireland, Sept. 24, 1843, where he grew to young manhood, he later spent five years in England where he learned the trade of iron and steel worker. He came to America soon after the end of the Civil war, and located at Scranton, Pa., where he was employed in the steel mills. He was married to Mary Ann Connell, June 30, 1875, at Scranton...... The family came to Madison county in 1882. Mr. Halpin bought a homestead relinquishment near Battle Creek where he farmed until 1890. ... An old steel mill injury forced him to give up farming. The family later moved to Norfolk....Mr. Halpin was a devout Catholic....He subscribed to and read the 'Irish World' for over seventy years, to keep in touch with his native land.... He was a member of the school board, also road overseer in the rural district of their homestead. With Mrs. Halpin he returned twice to Ireland for extended visits,.... He was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. and Mrs. Halpin observed their golden wedding in 1925..... Four daughters and two sons survive him. They are; Mrs. James Kent, Columbus; Mrs. Delia Lauver, Battle Creek; Mrs. Everett Pettitt, Norfolk; Mrs. Schramm, Pierce; M. L. Halpin, Winside, (who has been in Pierce this fall assisting with his father's care); and James HALPIN, Los Angeles. There are eighteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
