Clad only in a shirt, the lifeless form of Michael Foley, an old and well known resident of Marion township, was found late on Wednesday afternoon, stretched on the floor beside the kitchen stove at his home. The gruesome discovery was made by Will Wisser, a young neighbor, who went to the place to inform Mr. Foley that some of his stock was running at large. Mr. Wisser quickly gave an alarm and notified Will Foley, a son of the deceased, who farms a little distance from the place occupied by his father. Coroner Barnett, who resides in Merrill, was summoned and also Undertaker Nic Wiltgen, from LeMars. In their judgment death had ensued from thirty to thirty-six hours before the finding of the corpse which was frozen stiff. Mr. Foley lived alone of late although his sons and daughters often asked him to live with some one of them, but he stated his preference to live by himself. His son had not seen him since last Friday. Mr. Foley was in town that day and was seen by neighbors on Saturday and Sunday. From appearances it would seem that Mr. Foley was stricken by death while in the act of kindling a fire in the kitchen stove. The lid of the stove was raised and there was some charred paper and kindling in the grate. He had apparently taken a lamp from which to get some kerosene to start the fire. The lamp with the top unscrewed was found on the kitchen table while the top was in the grate of the stove. When the body was found there were marks of slight burns on the legs and feet and on the side of the face. The presumption is that he was stricken with heart failure and fell against the stove just as he had ignited the paper and kindling. A small hole was burned in the floor of the kitchen. Coroner Barnett has decided to hold an inquest at one o'clock this afternoon. The stock on the place with the exception of some pigs, had been turned out on Sunday. Mr. Foley had resided in Marion township for the last thirty-six years and was well known in this county, being active in local affairs and in county politics. He was born in Ireland and was sixty-nine years of age on September 26th last. When a boy of fourteen years of age he came to this country with relatives. Before coming to Plymouth county he lived near Independence, Iowa, and Dakota City, Neb. About thirty-eight years ago he was united in marriage with Catherine Monahan at Jackson, Neb., and shortly after their marriage they came to Plymouth county. Mrs. Foley died in 1902. The deceased is survived by his three sons, Will Foley, of Marion township; Robert and Thos. Foley, of Union township; and four daughters, Mrs. John Kramer, of Mitchell, S.D.; Mrs. Henry Becker, Mrs. M. E. Hentges, of this county, and Miss Marie Foley, of Mitchell, S.D. A son, Joseph Foley, died five years ago. The funeral will be held on Saturday and Interment made in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery by the body of his wife.
