Read More	Michael John Manatt died Friday July 1, 2005 at the age of 52 from a massive heart attack. Mike was born June 23, 1953 to Clair and Ruth (Backen) Manatt. He graduated from BGM High School in 1971 and went on to receive a degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1975. While he was there he met the love of his life, the one who would love and support him through everything that was to come. On August 2, 1975, he wed JoAnn Howell with whom he had four sons: Adam(26), Brian(24), Gregory(19), and Erik(16). After working for a civil engineering firm in the Chicago area for two years, he rejoined the family business Manatts Inc. and earned his Professional Engineering (PE) license. Mike was vice president of Manatts Inc. and ran the PCC paving and projects division of the company. He was the immediate past president of Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Iowa at the time of his passing. Mike was the member of numerous professional and community groups. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Patriot Bank, Norris Asphalt Paving Co., L.L. Pelling, the Foundation Board of the Grinnell Regional Hospital, and was an active member of AGC of Iowa, Iowa Concrete Paving Association (of which he was a past-president), and Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. Mike was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. His work was not just a job; it was his passion. The employees of Manatts Inc. were like a second family to him. He was always thinking of new and innovative ways to improve the industry he loved so much, and was especially proud of the collaboration on the Paradigm recycling system. Mike always considered his fellow contractors to be friends rather than competitors, and through the AGC he strove to improve the relationships between all of the people in the construction industry. Even though Mike was always busy with work and professional commitments, he never missed one of his sons' events, from football games to band concerts and speech contests, he was always there supporting them. Family always came first. Mike enjoyed riding his Harley, scuba diving, and spending time with his family. He loved sipping mojitos and watching the sunset over the ocean. Mike loved to travel—from the thrill of takeoff to making friends in foreign lands—he enjoyed exploring new places. Mike is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his sons, Adam of West Des Moines, Brian, Gregory, and Erik of Brooklyn; his siblings, Curt of Johnston, Alan (Janet) of Tama, Jerry of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Ann (Doug) Doolin of Hayden, Colorado, and Mary (Barry) Kinsey of Lucas; sister-in-law Linda of Ames; close family friend Don Brannian of Brooklyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Clair and Ruth and his brother Thomas. Visitation will be held at Manatts Corporate Office in Brooklyn, Iowa on Tuesday July 5 from 2 to 8 PM with a scripture service at 7:30 PM. A Memorial service will be held at Manatts Corporate Office on Wednesday July 6 at 10:30 AM. Nevenhoven Funeral Services of Brooklyn are in charge of arrangements.
