Michael C. Blue, 84, one of the best known men in Wells county departed this life last evening at 11:30 at his home in Tocsin, following a stroke of paralysis last Monday noon. Mr. Blue was unconscious intermittently until the end. Michael C. Blue was on of the stalwart pioneers of Wells county an it is due to men of his caliber that the county and state has reached the high degree of advancement of the present day. Coming to Wells county from Ohio when he was less that four years old of age, Michael Blue began his life in Indiana in the midst of the tractless forest and amid the hardships and privations of a poverty stricken home. The elder Blue entered a tract of 160 acres of government land, and being handy with tools, opened a repair shop adjacent to his forest home. His services as cooper and wagonmaker were soon in demand and by the practice of rigid economy and unflagging industry the Blue family soon began to prosper. By the time he had arrived at manhood, Michael Blue had attained an education equal to any man in the country, all by his own diligence in reading in his spare moments, and by attending the poor schools which were widely scattered and wretchedly conducted. Mr. Blue then stated to teach school and acquired means to attend school at Murray and later to take a course in Roanoke Seminary. He was especially proficient in mathematics and was soon rated as one of the most accomplished civil engineers in the northern part of the state. On May 1, 1866, Mr. Blue was united in marriage to Miss Rhoda A. Richey, daughter of William S. Richey, also one of the pioneers of the county. To this union six children were born, five of whom survive; Clem Blue, Dr. C. L. Blue, Fred Blue, Don Blue and Mrs. John Essner, all of Tocsin. Only one sister survives Mr. Blue, Mrs. John Kunkel, of Poneto, the following brothers and sisters being deceased - Mary Smith, Lucinda McKinsey, James, Catherine and John Blue. Mrs. Blue preceded her husband in death about 5 years. Mr. Blue was a staunch member of the Methodist Episcopal church and for many years he was a class leader. In politics he had always been a democrat and it was chiefly through such labors as his, while active in political circles that Wells county was held so steadfastly in the democratic columns. Steadfast Democrat Without any solicitation on his part, he was nominated to the office of county surveyor and was elected by more that the usual majority. Later he was nominated and elected to the office of county auditor and discharged the duties of the office for four years. He was then elected twice to the state legislature where he served his country with distinction. He was the author of and instrumental in passing many bills which are now laws upon the statute books. While generous and liberal almost to the point of prodigality, Mr. Blue, by the practice of self denial and economy had saved much of the money he acquired by labor and judicious investments and had accumulated considerable property and owned approximately 400 acres of land in Jefferson and Lancaster townships. He was a member of the Masonic lodge having held membership in Bluffton lodge No. 145. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 at the Methodist church a mile and a half west of Tocsin in charge of Rev. George Snider, of Hoagland. Burial in Tocsin cemetery.
