Description	:	Pocahontas Democrat, Pocahontas, IA, February 17, 1916 Michael McAlpin was born in Meo county, Ireland, October 31, 1835, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.E. Kreul in Pocahontas, February 8, 1916, at the age of 80 years, three months and seven days. Deceased moved to Ontario, Canada in 1842, and was married to Elizabeth Welsh in Petersboro, Canada, in the year 1853. In 1857 they moved to Boone, Iowa, and about three years later they moved onto the homestead in Bellville township. To this union six children were born, two died in infancy. Those left to mourn his departure are Jas. McAlpin of Bellville township, Mrs. Wm. Perrington, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Mrs. P. McDonald of Stewart, Minnesota, Mrs. B.E. Kreul of Pocahontas and also a brother, Jas. McAlpin of Naple Lake, Minnesota, a half brother, Michael Donohoe and two half sisters, Mrs. Wm. Kennedy and Mrs. Daniel Kennedy all of Ontario, Canada. His wife died in 1873. The funeral was held Friday morning from Sacred Heart church with solemn requiem mass celebrated by Father Pape of this city, Father Nipple of Pomeroy and Father O’Reilly of Manson. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. Michael McAlpin enrolled in the civil war in January 11, 1865, to serve two years but was discharged May 11, 1865, while holding grade of private in 93rd Regiment of New York infantry and taken to hospital in Elmira, New York, being wounded while serving. Those from out of town who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. P. McDonald of Stewart, Minnesota, Jas. McAlpin, a brother and Michael McAlpin, a nephew, of Naple Lake, Minnesota. Relatives of the deceased wish to thank their many friends and neighbors for their kind assistance during his sickness and death for the beautiful floral offerings.
