Description	:	On April 22, 1921, a blue eyed, black haired girl was born to Elizabeth (McKivergan) & Patrick Gormally. She was named Mildred Lucille Mary Gormally after her godmother Lucy McKivergan. Read More	On April 22, 1921, a blue eyed, black haired girl was born to Elizabeth (McKivergan) & Patrick Gormally. She was named Mildred Lucille Mary Gormally after her godmother Lucy McKivergan. Mary was born at home in Goodwin, NE by Dr. Magirl, a friend of the family. As Mildred grew older, people said she and her sister Margaret, older by 18 months, looked alike. Mildred was nicknamed "Millie" but called "Mul" by her sisters which she didn't care for. There was no tv when Mildred was growing up, but the family bought a radio when Mildred was in her early teens. The children played games like hopscotch, hide & seek, softball, marbles, drop the handkerchief, red rover and jacks. It was always popular to meet other kids to Indian leg wrestle, which Mildred was quite good at. Mildred would continue to be good at Indian leg wrestling throughout the years, even teaching her grandchildren how to do it. The family lived on an acreage on the west edge of Jackson so they had a cow and chickens. There was a cookstove in the kitchen and a heating stove in the living room. The girls all shared a room. Mildred's father, Patrick, ran a saloon in Goodwin and they lived on a farm east of Goodwin at one point. After losing his share in the saloon business in Oakdale, NE, Patrick & Elizabeth moved to the Hilltop Ranch by Goodwin, NE and lived on the old McKivergan farm where Elizabeth was raised. Mildred was born there before moving near Jackson, NE. As Mildred and her siblings grew older, times were tough and didn't get easier. They often wished someone rich would come and adopt them. Mildred remembers her mother taking in extra work as a seamstress and she and her sisters would have to try on the dresses for fittings, but could never keep them. Mildred remember the kerosene lamps, gas lights and candles. There wasn't an attic or basement in their little house and everything was homemade, even most of the games and toys. At Christmas they would hang up their stocking and Santa would come. They didn't ask for much because they knew the times were tough. They would get pencils or colors and once in awhile a cheap doll. In the winter they were a lot of snow so they went sleigh-riding and did a little skating on the frozen creek. Mildred would meet Thomas Robert Kneifl, from Newcastle, NE when she was about 16 or 17 years old. Frances Richards had a cousin (Margaret Richards) that lived in Jackson who was Mildred's best friend. Tom & Mildred were introduced by Margaret Richards Graber. Tom was out of high school when he met Mildred and she was at the end of her junior year. Their first date was at a dance in Jackson. On their 2nd date, Tom rode up to Mildred's house to find her mother sitting outside and asked if it was all right if he took Milderd to a dance. (He said he was scared to death of the Eagle Eye!) Elizabeth said it was ok as long as Mary (Mildred's older sister) said it was ok. They went to Riverview Park which had rides, picnic areas and a riverboat. They went on a ride called the rocket and Tom got sick and threw up. They played Bingo after this. When Mildred & Tom were dating she became ill - which she hardly ever did. She had fainted and woke up to find out she had mumps - which she shared with Tom. Mildred would eventually take her C-Normal training and became a teacher. She took a job in rural Dixon, NE at the age of 18. Tom was in his 2nd year of teaching when the service called. He would come back to see Mildred as often as he could. Tom raised a few chickens on the side and eventually sold the flock for $100 and used the money to buy an engagement and wedding ring set. In November 1942, Tom was given a week furlough. He came home to Nebraska and on November 16, 1942 at 9 am, Tom & Mildred were married at Jackson, NE. It was a small wedding, with Mildred wearing a brown dress due to war-time rations. They honeymooned in Sioux Falls, SD. Anyone getting married could get a 15 day furlough - Tom took 17 days. If he had been discovered late, he would've been considered AWOL - luckily the men in his group covered for him. Tom was discharged in 1943 and he and Mildred returned to Nebraska. Mildred and Tom took jobs at Swift's Meat Packing P lant in Sioux City, Iowa and rented an apartment there. In the spring they moved back to the family farm southwest of Newcastle, NE. They lived with Tom's parents. Tom wanted to go back to the state of Washington where he had served in the army, but his mom was sick and had asked him to come back to the farm. Tom's mom, Mary Magdalene Pletsch Kneifl, taught Mildred how to cook. When Mildred first made scrambled eggs for Tom, he nearly puked. In town, Mildred would just pour milk or water and whip it into the eggs and cook them. This was the way to make eggs go further. Tom explained that he was used to eggs mixed with a little water and cut up in chunks in the pan. With the birth of Tom & Mildred's eldest child, Thomas Patrick, the eggs came back to haunt Mildred. Tom's niece stayed to help with the newborn and had been taught the Kneifl way to make eggs. Tom said "That's how to make eggs!" OBITUARY: NEWCASTLE, Neb. -- Mildred Mary Lucille Kneifl, 89, of Newcastle passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Elms Care Center on Ponca, Neb. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Mildred was born April 22, 1921, on a farm near Goodwin, Neb. (rural Willis, Neb.), the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth (McKivergan) Gormally Jr. When she was about 5 years old, the family moved to Jackson, Neb., where she attended and graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in 1939. She taught country school for one year at District 42 in Daily Township, Dixon County, Neb., and three years at the Rush School, between Ponca and Willis. On Nov. 16, 1942, she married Thomas R. Kneifl at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, Sacred Heart Sodality and the American Legion Unit 162 for more than 49 years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and baking. She devoted her time to her husband, children, home and church. She dearly loved babies and children. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her two sons, Thomas P. and his wife, LouAnn and Bart and his wife, Chris, all of Newcastle; two daughters, Joan Vance of Omaha and Ann and her husband, Larry Guenther of Arvada, Colo.; a son-in-law, Bill Wellenstein of Ponca, Neb.; a sister, Monica and her husband, Gene Marron of Omaha; two brothers-in-law, Leonard O'Neill of Omaha and Mark Kneifl and his wife, Gayle of Newcastle; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren with two on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas on Aug. 17, 2010; her parents; a daughter, Mary Wellenstein on Nov. 16, 2009; an infant son, David; an infant grandson, Paul Jude Wellenstein; a brother, William Gormally; and three sisters, Mary (Leonard) O'Neill, Margaret (Art) Manley and Bonnie (Joe) Hayes (Ervin) Noecker.
