COURIER TRIBUNE, Seneca, Kansas, Thursday, July 18, 1929. Page 1. Now Think Money Matters Led To Allen Suicide Under sheriff John Taylor, who with County Attorney H. A. Lanning, investigated the suicide of Teddy Allen Monday at his home four miles south of Bern, believes it was worry over money matters that led the 21 year old youth to use a 410 shotgun to end his life. Telephone reports to the Courier Tribune shortly after Teddy Allen shot himself in the breast, were to the effect that he was worrying about his engagement to a young woman of Bern. Mr. Taylor found this was not at all likely. Allen had called upon the young woman the night previous. There was no estrangement; on the contrary they were making plans for their wedding to take place in December. Allen worked in the field during the morning. He came to the house and sat down to check over his accounts and prospects. He filled a large sheet of tablet paper with figures and reached a conclusion that he would not have more than $120 to show for his summer's work. It is thought his disconsolation over this situation and lack of funds to found a home were the motives behind his act. "Teddy"- Miles Allen, Jr. Bern young man who took his life a few days ago, was born on a farm near Kelly. Young Miles wanted to leave his life insurance, after his debts were paid, to his fiancee, Lena Hurd. It was said this cannot be done, for Allen a insurance policy has a clause which amends the policy if there is a suicide within one year. Funeral service for the dead youth were held at the Methodist church at Sabetha at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday, conducted by Rev. E. E. Besuchamp. BERN YOUNG MAN TAKES HIS OWN LIFE From the Courier-Tribune- Teddy Allen, 21 years old, son of Miles Allen, four miles south of Bern, ended his own life in the front room of the Allen home at 12:30 today. Young Allen used a shotgun. The family at once notified Bern authorities and Bern called County Attorney Lanning and Undersheriff John Taylor. There was no doubt, however, but that the young man had taken his ow life. He left a note to his parents in which he mentioned a $1,000 life insurance policy, requested that his debts first be paid and that the balance be given his fiancee. It was said at the Allen home this afternoon that worry over a young woman was the only cause known for the act. The family said he had not been sick. In his note he also requested that a car upon which he had not completed payments be taken back to the dealer. Teddy Allen is survived by seven brothers and sisters.
