Wert, oldest daughter of Anton and Anna (Hula) Langr was born in Czechoslovakia and was baptized in the Catholic Church of her native country. She and her family came to the United States when she was five years old. They made their home in the DuBois, Virginia and Table Rock area. There she attended school and grew to womanhood. September 28, 1922 she was married to William H. Wert of Elk Creek. They made their home on a farm in Johnson and Pawnee counties for twenty-nine years. Two children were born to this union: Carol Jean of Pawnee City and William H.,Jr. of Waconia, Minn. William and Millie retired from the farm in October of 1961 moving to Pawnee City. There, in May of 1966 she became a member of the United Presbyterian Church. For many years she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Pleasant Valley E. U. B. Ladies Aid and the Good Cheer Home Extension Club. She enjoyed her home and family, garden, flowers, and needlework, recently completing her seventieth quilt. Will and Millie observed their Golden Wedding anniversary September 28, 1972, with an "Open House" and their 55th anniversary in 1977 with family and friends. Millie had been in failing health for several years. She suffered a heart attack in 1965 and a stroke in 1975. She was called to her eternal home December 13, 1978 at Pawnee County Memorial Hospital at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband William; daughter Carol Jean and son-in-law Willard Thiemann of Pawnee City; son William and daughter-in-law, Marcella and grandson Steven of Waconia, Minn.; grandson Larry Thiemann, wife Marjorie, grandchildren Sheila Ann and Billy of Pawnee City; and grandson Michael Wert and wife, Sheri of Winona, Minn. Sisters and brother surviving include, Frank Langr of Peru, Mrs. Mary Gottula of Omaha, Mrs. Glen (Anna) Burr of Johnson and Mrs. Wayne (Emilie) Schaffer of Tarkio, Mo., plus several nieces and nephews and many friends. Services were held Saturday December 16, 1978 at 1:30 at the United Presbyterian Church in Pawnee City with Rev. Lloyd Fonken officiating. Pallbearers included James and Thomas Robison, Harold Bucholz of Elk Creek, Wilber Bucholz and Kenneth Gilbert of Table Rock and Thomas Matthews of Omaha. Mrs. Richard Turnbull, soloist sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lords Prayer" with Mrs. Ross Thiemann, organist. Interment was in the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City. No one knows how we miss her Life will never be the same Friends may think we've forgotten When at times they see us smile Little do they know the heartaches Our smile holds all the while But there's an open gate at the end of the road Through which each must go alone And there is a light we cannot see as Our Father claims his own Beyond the gate our loved one fins happiness and rest And there is comfort in the thought that our Loving God knows best.
