She was transferred from the Bury Boarding Home here in Lamar to Memorial Hospital on February 5. The 92 year old woman was born Sept. 21, 1869 at Lincoln, Illinois. When she was five years old, she came with her parents, Henry J. and Ann Whitesell, to Barton county, making the trip overland by covered wagon. The family settled in the west part of the county on a farm that at present is described as located four miles northwest of Liberal. However, the town of Liberal had not come into existence at the time of the arrival of the Whitesell family. She was married in the parental home to Herbert A. Waterman December 11, 1895. The newlyweds located on a farm near Girard, Kansas. Three years later they returned to Barton county to make their home on a farm across the road from the farm on which she had spent her childhood and young womanhood. In 1918 the couple moved into Liberal. The husband died on January 29, 1954. The widow, although well along in her eighties, continued to maintain the home, living alone for a number of years, when the enfeeblement brought on by age made it necessary for her to enter a nursing home at Jasper, from which she later moved to the Bury Home in Lamar. Up until that time she had been very active in church, lodge and social affairs in spite of her advanced age. She was an intelligent, kindly woman, noted among her neighbors for her tolerance and willingness to give assistance where needed. The couple had no children and the deceased leaves no near of kin survivors. The body was taken to the Berkey Funeral Home at Mulberry to be prepared for burial. The last rites were set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Church at Liberal. Interment follows in Rosebank Cemetery at Mulberry. Info courtesy Find A Grave contributor Greg Volk.
