She was born in Alcorn County, Mississippi. She was named Minnie Reed McCarthy at birth. Her mother was born in Hardin County, Tennessee and her father in Ireland. Her parents worked on the Reed plantation when she was a small child. We are uncertain why they decided to move to Weld County, Colorado, but we assume it is because of mining and a new territory. Minnie was the oldest of three children. Her grandmother's brother George Franklin Key and his wife Eliza Beasley Key also lived in Colorado and that may be why they moved there. Minnie's father Patrick McCarthy was Irish, and my grandmother told me that he had studied to be a priest for one year in Ireland, where he was born. He didn't like it, so he stowed away on a ship to come to America. That is why it is impossible to find immigration papers on him. He came up the Mississippi river and landed a job in Alcorn County, Mississippi on the Reed plantation. That is probably why great grandmother's middle name was Reed. Minnie's grandmother and her family moved to Weld County, Colorado where her father became a coal miner. He died not long after moving there leaving the mother (Sarah) with 3 small children. She couldn't take care of them by herself. Thus the oldest child (Minnie) went to live with her cousins Frank and Eliza Key who had three children of their own. She attended college at Fort Collins College. She taught penmanship at the college until she met great grandpa John Ewing who was from Mitchell, Nebraska. He would ride over on horseback to bring Colorado cattle back to Nebraska. He fell in love with Minnie and they were married June 23, 1900. To them were born 4 children: Dwight, Telford, Wyola and Louella. My grandmother being Wyola. Life was hard on the prairie on Nebraska. Their life consisted of ranching and farming and they did pretty well for themselves considering the land. There first home was a dugout where great grandma would sprinkle the dirt floors with water every day. They became hard as a rock and slick too. They lived and worked on the farm until 1950. At that time they moved into town in Gering. She and great grandpa were known for riding in the Oregon Trail Parade. In 1938 great grandpa was president of the parade. They were in the Old Settler's club and they had a family museum next to their home. I don't remember great grandmother but I know she was a very small lady and extremely tough. Her life stories are special and I wish that I could have captured them word-for-word. Derry Bennett Creutz (great grand daughter)
