Deceased was born February 23, 1830 at Spofford [Spafford], New York. He was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, having come to Douglas county in 1856, making his home for a while at Elk City, then removed to Omaha, but returned to Waterloo in 1875 where he had since resided. His illness was of short duration being a little less than two weeks.The best of medical assistance was obtained and all that loving hearts and hands could do, was one in the effort to restore him to his wanted health, but Death's angel had marked him for her own, and gently came in the silent watches of the night and bore away his spirit to meet its God. Mr. Purchase was a man possessing a very kind and sunny disposition, he was a good husband and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Although he and his estimable wife had no children of their own they gathered about them and had at all times a large and pleasant family circle of loved ones, who with the widow mourn his loss. The funeral rites were held at the residence on Tuesday morning at 10:30 conducted by Rev. F. F. Cook. There was a large assembly of sympathizing friends and a profusion of beautiful floral tributes. The bereaved ones have the heartfelt sympathy of all and the blessed assurance of the Master that there is no death, for "He that overcometh shall inherit everlasting life." The interment took place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery [Prospect Hill Cemetery]. The pallbearers were Messrs. George Geiston, O. A. Wolcott, F.M. Park, C. Hopper, S.P. Groat, J. R. Watts. Floral Pillow---messrs. J. C. Robinson, John Nesbit, J.M. Park and D. T. Park, and a number of beautiful tributes without cards. In attendance from abroad--Mrs. George Black, Olathe, Kansas; Vincent Kinney, Francis Kinney, Will Burgess, R. K. Brown, James North, Dr. Jallings, J. N. L. McConnell, Doc. G. Smith, William Preston, Miss Anna Crarey, Omaha --- Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dodge, Prof. N.
