During the Civil War days there were many uprisings of the Sioux Indian tribe. Council Bluffs, Iowa was the nearest fort. Her grandparents always kept a trunk that was packed with bedding and many other items so they could take a quick exit to the fort. Harcourt Rogers, Myrtle's father, was the first white child born in the Little Sioux River in Iowa.
