Description	:	Myrtle Josephine, the eldest child of Henry and Sarah (Wiseman) Cartner, was born July 8, 1876, in Cowley County near Winfield, Kansas. Four years later the family moved by covered wagon to Brown County. The farm where they located was to be their home for thirty years. Read More	Myrtle Josephine, the eldest child of Henry and Sarah (Wiseman) Cartner, was born July 8, 1876, in Cowley County near Winfield, Kansas. Four years later the family moved by covered wagon to Brown County. The farm where they located was to be their home for thirty years. Myrtle attended the country school and was also privileged to have music lessons. She was married to Enoch Derrick on December 2, 1895. Three years earlier he had been bereft of his wife and was left with three little daughters, Lydia, Mary and Cora. Into his home Myrtle came as wife and mother and gave herself fully to the household duties and responsibilities. One daughter, Nellie, was born to this union. Mr. Derrick was a farmer and the family resided in Brown County until the spring of 1904 when the home was established in the Buckeye Community near Abilene, Kansas. Mr. Derrick died in 1932. It was Myrtle's desire to remain at their farm home, and arrangements were made for her daughter Nellie with her husband, Samuel R. Merkey to share the home. This arrangement has continued through the years and as Mrs. Derrick grew older and experienced failing health, they gave her the concern and care which she needed. In March, 1965, her condition necessitated skilled care and she became a resident of the Lutheran Christian Home for the Age at Herington, Kansas where she passed away on July 1, 1967, at the age of 90 years. In girlhood she accepted Christ and following her marriage, she became a member of the Church of the Brethren at Morrill, Kansas. She was an active Christian participating in the activities of the Church of the Brethren at Buckeye as long as her strength permitted. She taught in the Sunday School for many years, was the chorister, and served with her husband in the office of deacon. Many in the community were grateful for her help in times of sickness and sorrow. She and her husband gave high priority in their home to the church. The family altar was a part of each day. She was the last of her generation in her own and in her husband's family. A daughter, Mrs. Mary Strohm and two infant grandsons preceded her in death. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Nellie Merkey, Mrs. Lydia Kauffman both of Abilene, and Mrs. Cora Bert of Chicago. There are 10 grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends who will hold her life in their memories. Memorial services were held for Mrs. Derrick at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene July 5, with Rev. Henry Stover and Rev. Frances Shanefelt, as ministers. Music was given by Mrs. Delmar Iseli and Mrs. Bill Sharp. Casket bearers were Edward McCash, Vernon Holdsworth, Delbert Lowry, Rand Lowry, Dean Underhill, and Elbert Frey.
