She came into this world on March 12, 1920, in Orangeburg, S. C. and was the eldest of four daughters born to Ira Grantham and Minnie Huff Holland. After graduating from Orangeburg High School, she enrolled in another year of business school which prepared her for her career that she so enjoyed as a bookkeeper and secretary. Myrtle's love of working with numbers was evident in the positions she held over the years in clubs and organizations. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Orangeburg taking an active part teaching a Y-Teens group of young adult women. After working part-time at the local department store, she began full time work with Freidman's Jewelers, and also with the Kingan Meat Processing Company. After her marriage to Robert Carlisle Jones in 1946, the couple moved to Charleston, where Robert was employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and began their lives together. In 1954 Myrtle and Robert built their new home in Berkeley Hills, in what is now known as Hanahan. She continued her membership in Charleston Heights Baptist Church, until 1958 when she attended the first Sunday Service of Highland Park Baptist Church. Myrtle immediately moved her membership there, and became an active and loyal member. She sang soprano in the adult choir, and began her 45 years of teaching Sunday School. Her faith in the Lord was evident in her soft spoken manner, and in the way she approached life and her service to the Church and community. The life she lived reflected her deep and abiding faith in the Lord, and was evident in her relationships. She read and studied her Bible daily, prayed for friends, loved ones and colleagues. For 25 years as Church Clerk she kept accurate records of the proceedings at the monthly business meetings. Also, she was involved in the Women's Missionary Union, serving as Chairman for a two year term. On several occasions when the Church was without a pastor, Myrtle served on the Pastor's Search Committee. As the Church grew, she served in several Anniversary Celebrations Committees, and the Long Range Planning and Survey Committee to anticipate the future growth of the community and the impact that Highland Park Baptist Church would have on the surrounding area. Myrtle Jones was instrumental in the organization of the Berkeley Hills Garden Club in 1954, and was a charter member. She was recognized as a leader and organizer throughout the lower part of the State as she became a Life Member of the Garden Club of South Carolina, and served as treasurer for many years on the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston. She served as President of Berkeley Hills Garden Club for three terms, as well as, serving on the Executive Board of the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston and as Chairman of the Councils' Fall Flower Show in 1997. Being active in her community, she served as a representative in the City of Hanahan Clean Up Week many times. Myrtle retired after serving as the Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper for R. E. Mevers Contractor, Inc. She enjoyed working in the historic downtown part of the city, and seeing the results of the restoration and preservation of so many of the older homes. The visitation will be held Friday March 11, 2016, in Highland Park Baptist Church, Hanahan, S. C. from 6PM to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday March, 12, 2016, in J. Henry Stuhrs,Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, at 11:00AM where the family will receive friends one hour before services. Committal services will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. J.
