Scarcely had the report of sudden death of an old citizen gone abroad, then the news that Mrs. Varner had passed away, came as a sorrowful shock. On Sunday evening all the members of the family with a friend were at home and sat and talked until a late hour. They could not know it would be their last night with mother. Mrs. Varner had not enjoyed good health for some years. Yet with fine courage and true devotion, she gave herself in loving service for her husband and children. Her first and last thought was for their comfort and welfare. But she was also interested in her church, the school, the Womens' Club. She was interested in athletics and often watched the home team of her boys, win the game. She will be sadly missed and sincerely mourned, not only by the bereaved family and relatives, but a wide circle of friends. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the stricken family. Myrtle May Francis was born May 14, 1882 at Manchester, Ohio and died at her home in Adams Monday, Feb. 18, 1924. She was the youngest of eleven children, ten of whom are still living. The family came to Nebraska in 1886 and located on a farm near Sterling. Her parents died when she was twelve years old, after which she made her home with sisters in Sterling. During her girlhood she confessed her faith in Christ her Savior, and united with the church. She was united in marriage to Edmund W. Varner in 1903 and in the fall of 1907 the family removed to Adams. Six children came to their home, one of whom died in infancy. Those living are Lewis Clark, Theodore Lawrence, Jay Lorin, Keith Frances, and Alma May. The brothers and sisters are: Nelson B., John L. and William S. of Sterling; George B. of Kingfisher, Okla.; Andrew J. of Hoyt, Kan., Mrs. Antoinette A. Ives, of Watonga, Okla.; Mrs. Laura B. Kneeland, of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Margaret Atkins, of Lincoln, and Harvey Y. Francis of Adams. The funeral service was held at 1 o'clock Wednesday in the home. Conducted by Rev. W.I. Doole and Rev. R. H. Carr. Two comforting hymns, "Saved by Grace" and "Abide with me fast falls the Eventide" were sung by Mrs. Liggit and Mrs. Hurst, with Mrs. Rena Kerns, accompanist. The members of Mrs. Varner's bible class served as pallbearers. The casket was taken to Sterling for interment. Mr. Carr and friends accompanied the family. There was a wealth of beautiful flowers contributed.
