Van Buren, daughter of William A and Maude (Vibbard) Howard wa born on a farm near Royal, Feb 2 1908 and passed away at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, KS, Fe 23 1994. She was the third child in her parent's family of ten. Most of her childhood years were spent in Knox County. She attended Verdigre High School completing the 10 grad. She was married Benjamin H. Van Buren Mar. 13 1925 at Center. They lived and farmed in Knox County near Verdigre while raising their Five Children. Survivors include a son Oscar of Omaha, daughters Ima Shutt, of Wichita, KS, Emma Kotrous of Verdigre, Norma Lee Croxen of Creighton; 26 Grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, brothers John Howard of Baltimore, MD, Fred Howard of Belgrade and sister Ella Van Every of O'Neill. She was preceded in death by a daughter Evelyn Blair, her parents five brothers, one sister, one grandson and two Great Granddaughters. My Favorite Memory of Grandma (Myrtle) Van Buren The quick way to check the shingles on the house. During the summer of 1986 we stopped, in Norfolk to see Grandma Myrtle) when our children were ages, 4,3 and 2. Grandma suggested that the kinds might like to help her dig potatoes. Having the need to release the boundless energy that Great Grandchildren have we headed outside for the garden spot next to the house hoping this would make our drive back to Wichita, Kansas better if they worked off some energy. I with a shovel, and grandma with a hoe started our digging for the elusive spuds. Each time one appeared the kids would dive on the top of them as if they had found some mew valuable treasure. Grandma was taking great delight in using her hoe to move the soil and watched the kid's excitement. Grandma then remembered that there was a few more plants closer to the foundation and she began to move some of the top cover with her hoe looking for the plants and then the EXCITEMENT BEGAN. She yelled "Snake" threw the hoe high in the air and down toward the ground striking the poor startled creature. Grandma was excited, that's for sure. When the hoe hit the ground she sprang straight into the air, high enough it seemed, that she could have stood upright on my shoulders. With each succeeding blow when seemed to jump higher into the air. Even at Grandma's age of 78, it wasn't so much her apparent dislike of snakes that surprised me but her ability to move so quickly. She was able to strike at this creature and then spring high enough into the air to also check the shingles on the house roof at the same time, yet miss the great grand-kids who were trying o see and/or catch the snake and miss her own toes because grandma hadn't put any shoes on when we went outside" After that eventful summer day. I could not resist teasing Grandma, when we would stop in Norfolk, by asking if she had checked the shingles on the roof lately.
