Description	:	Obituary: Myrtle (Torberson) Oliver, was born April 19, 1907 on a farm in Canton Township, Lincoln County, South Dakota, the daughter of Bernard and Oline "Lena" (Sunvold) Torgerson. She attended Lantaff Country School and graduated from Canton High School in 1925. She received her teaching certificate from Augusta Normal in Canton graduating in 1927. Myrtle taught school in Lincoln and Turner Counties for 10 years. Myrtle was united in marriage to Merton Oliver June 1, 1937 at St. Edward parsonage in Worthing, SD. She attended Lantaff Country School and graduated from Canton High School in 1925. She received her teaching certificate from Augusta Normal in Canton graduating in 1927. Myrtle taught school in Lincoln and Turner Counties for 10 years. Myrtle was united in marriage to Merton Oliver June 1, 1937 at St. Edward parsonage in Worthing, SD. They made their home on a farm southwest of Canton, where they were engaged in farming. They retired to Canton in 1976. Her husband died November 11, 1990. Myrtle was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Canton and was active in the Altar Society. She served as education director of Farmer's Union Youth Work for 25 years. She also was a member of the Canton Senior Citizen's Center and the Friendly Neighbor Club. Myrtle was an excellent seamstress and loved working with hand crafts. Myrtle became a resident of Canton Good Samaritan Center in July of 1997. She died Monday, September 14, 1998 at Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital, having attained the age of 91 years, 4 months, 25 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Merton, and one brother, Ernest Torberson. Those thankful for having shared her life are: her daughter, Margaret Baldwin and her husband, Don, Canton, SD; her son, Merlyn and his wife, Judy, Canton, SD; 6 granddaughters and 2 grandsons; 2 great grandchildren; a foster daughter, Gladys (Avilla) O'Brien, Jacksonville, AK; 3 brothers - Byron of Sioux Falls, SD, Lester of Canton and Clifford and his wife, Bernice of Canton, SD, and one sister, Bernice Michaelil, Sioux Falls, SD.
