Description	:	Nancy Ellen (Battershaw) Shandrew of Valentine passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 6th, 2020 in Omaha, Nebraska. She received her heavenly reward at 62 years old. Nancy was born on February 21st, 1957 in Fullerton, Nebraska to Dale and Elsie (Scholl) Battershaw. She was the seventh of eight children born into the Battershaw Family. She received her heavenly reward at 62 years old. Nancy was born on February 21st, 1957 in Fullerton, Nebraska to Dale and Elsie (Scholl) Battershaw. She was the seventh of eight children born into the Battershaw Family. The family moved to Valentine when Nancy was very young. Nancy attended school in Valentine. As a young girl, she spent the summers with her maternal grandparents on the farm in Albion, Nebraska. She loved to tell stories of her time on the farm and of her childhood, mostly of how much trouble her four brothers got into. She received her First Holy Communion at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She graduated from high school in Valentine in 1976. In her twenties, she went on to study at Chadron State College. Nancy lived in both Omaha and Washington State for a short time, but Valentine was always her home, and she loved it dearly. Nancy was married and gave birth to a son, Joseph, in 1989 in Omaha, Nebraska. Joseph was born quite premature, requiring them to live in Omaha while he was cared for at the Med Center. He was her miracle baby and the light of her life. Nancy loved being a mother to Joseph. Before Joseph was born, Nancy spent a lot of time with her nieces and nephews. Rarely did you see her without one. She adored them each and every one of them, but it was no secret that Jennifer was her “favorite” and that they were particularly close. She loved to have them spend the night with her, doing crafts together, having tea parties, hiking in the park, taking long walks, baking, or reading good books. Paddington Bear was her favorite. She was a gifted artist and could find beauty all around her, whether it was the sunflowers at the lake, the sunset on the river, or the mint that grew on the side of her parents’ house. She found the beauty in everything and always pointed it out to her nieces and nephews. In the latter part of her life, Nancy continued to dote on not only her nieces and nephews, but on their children as well. She always had small gifts for them, whether a small trinket or a small snack, she rarely showed up empty handed. Nancy loved to cook and bake and eat. She loved to cross-stitch and was a gifted seamstress. She loved to paint anything from tiles to flowerpots to ceramics. She loved older country music, especially Garth Brooks. She loved nostalgia and was very sentimental. She hated change. Nancy loved cats, probably a little too much. She was a talented writer. She had a quick wit, and often a sharp tongue to go along with it. She was a terrible driver, couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, cheated at cards, and had a terrible temper. Nancy was a fighter and overcame many hardships in her life. She stood up for what she believed in and was certainly one of-a-kind. The ties that bind a family together are not always pretty. They aren’t always perfect. Sometimes, they get all knotted up and it takes a while to undo the mess. Nancy had to undo a lot of knots throughout her life with her family, but the ties were never broken. Her family meant everything to her, always. She loved them all fiercely, though sometimes, imperfectly. And Nancy was most definitely loved by her family. Nancy is survived by son, Joseph Shandrew, of Lincoln and her sisters, Sandy (Don) Frey of Albion and Peggy (Roy) Baumgarten of Tieton, WA. She leaves behind two generations of nieces and nephews, many cousins, and extended family. Preceding her in death are her infant son, Timothy Shane, her parents, Dale and Elsie Battershaw, sister, Marie Kramer, and brothers, Jim, Jerry, Bob, and Bill Battershaw. A memorial service is being planned for this summer. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines is in charge of service arrangements.
