"Mrs. Brooks's maiden name was Nancy Geneva Hatcher. She was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, November 28, 1852, and grew to womanhood there. She was married to W. M. Brooks, July 4, 1868. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks moved to Lone Tree, Nebr., where they located on a farm. After a few months they moved to Davis County, Iowa, where they lived three years. They came to Lyon County in 1877, locating near Allen. In 1902 they came to Emporia, and have lived here and in Americus ever since. "Besides her husband, Mrs. Brooks leaves four children. They are Mrs. Mary Patton, Fowlerton, Texas; Mrs. Ida Roberts, Allen; Mrs. Cora L. Grimsley, Allen, and Mrs. Bessie Hawkins, of Emporia, with whom she lived. A. L. Brooks, a son died in Emporia in 1911. She had one brother, A. J. Hatcher, of El Dorado. "Mrs. Brooks was united with the Methodist Church when a young woman. All her life her interests largely lay within her home and with her children. During her four years of invalidism, she had suffered patiently and without complaint. Much of this time she busied herself with light house hold duties, and her courage and cheerfulness made her much admired by her friends."
