Description	:	OBITUARY---- Mrs. Matilda Moore Fisher was born in Allegheny Co., New York, July 5th, 1834, and died in Houston, Texas, Sept. 8, 1898. She was united in marriage to Mr. J. M. Fisher in the county of her nativity, Jan. 22, 1854. In 1856 she, with her husband, came to Muscatine County, Iowa, where they resided until 1896, when they removed to Houston, Texas. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fisher. One, Willis Waldo, died in infancy. Read More	OBITUARY---- Mrs. Matilda Moore Fisher was born in Allegheny Co., New York, July 5th, 1834, and died in Houston, Texas, Sept. 8, 1898. She was united in marriage to Mr. J. M. Fisher in the county of her nativity, Jan. 22, 1854. In 1856 she, with her husband, came to Muscatine County, Iowa, where they resided until 1896, when they removed to Houston, Texas. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fisher. One, Willis Waldo, died in infancy. The remaining seven reside at the following places: Gertrude (MacGowan) at Houston, Texas; John M. at Eagle Grove, Iowa; Stella (Haurigan) at Snyder, Neb., and Laura (Rock) Fred L., Hattie (Aikin) and Lou (Henderson), at West Liberty, Iowa. All the living children, with the husband and father, were present at the funeral to say goodbye forever, in this world, to a good, loving mother and companion. Mrs. Fisher was a faithful member of the Christian Church, having confessed her Savior in 1884. She thus lived in anticipation of the soul's greater victories in the heavenly home. The funeral services were held at the Christian Church, West Liberty by the pastor, Monday, Sept. 12, 1898, in the presence of a multitude of friends and loved ones. Thence we bore her body to the silent city, Oakridge, where, amid the quiet of unspoken yet loving memories, the earth received its own while the spirit rested from its labors in the keeping of Him, who hath prepared sweet resting for his saints.---- G. Burch , Pastor Source of Obituary: "WEST LIBERTY INDEX", West Liberty, Iowa, Date of newspaper: September, 1898 Nancy Matilda, the second child of James Moore and wife, Anna, was sent when yet a girl in her late teens to Monroeton, Pennsylvania in Bradford County, to live in the home of her Aunt Elizabeth Smith Cole and her husband, Salisbury Cole, who was a prominent farmer in the area. Uncle "Salb" tried to arrange a marriage for his wife's pretty niece with a substantial young man of the neighborhood, but Nancy was not in favor of the match, being secretly in love with Uncle Salb's nephew, James Marvin Fisher, the son of Salisbury's sister, Dolly Cole Fisher. Uncle Salb did not regard his nephew as good husband material, thinking him irreligious and also addicted to horse racing at the Camptown Races. However, James Marvin and Nancy were able to communicate somehow,and quietly slipped away one day to the home of Helen Lamira Fisher Lyons, James Marvin's older sister and were married by Justice of the Peace, Murray Martin, Esquire. Uncle Salb was furious when he learned about the wedding with what he considered Nancy's duplicity and a very bitter family quarrel ensued for which James Marvin never forgave his uncle. The result was the young couple migrated to Iowa, which was then just a territory and neither one of them ever went back to Monroeton again. At first, James Marvin went to Iowa alone, leaving his bride in the home of his parents, who also lived in Monroeton. As soon as he could he sent for his wife and child as Nancy had been expecting before he left Pennsylvania. In later years, Uncle Salb tried to heal the breach and wrote conciliatory letters but James Marvin would not allow them to be opened and had them returned to the sender. In a letter written by Ruth Cowart (our family historian) living at the time in Beaumont, TX, to Louisa Fisher Henderson on 12 March 1958, Ruth wrote the following: "Have not been so lucky with Grandmother Fisher's ancestry. There is an old legend that she was a cousin of John Quincy Adams, the second, through his mother; Abigail Smith Adams. Abigail Smith had one brother, William Smith, who was married three times and had five children by his first wife; none by the second; and one by the third wife. I could not find any of the first wife's children's names but the last wife had a son, Daniel."
