Dines, nee Murphy, was born in Franklin county, Ky., April 31, 1826, where she lived until she was ten years old, coming to Missouri with her parents in her childhood, she resided with them in Clark county until her marriage to John W. Dines, March 7, 1843; continuing to make their home in that county until March 1857, when they removed to Shelby county and settled near Shelbyville, where she lived up to the time of his death May 26, 1894, with her husband. During widowhood she made her home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Edgar Taylor, who lives about four miles east of Shelbyville, but spent much of her time visiting with her children. The last few months of her life were spent at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hersey in Chicago, when she departed this life April 18, 1900, and was laid to rest by the side of her late husband, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Shelbyville, after appropriate funeral services at the M. E. Church, South, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. M. O'Bryen, assisted by Rev. J. S. Todd. Deceased suffered for some years, with a cancerous tumor on one of her limbs, which finally ended her earthly life. Although a great sufferer she murmured not, but expressed herself as ready for the change when the messenger should come. In early life she gave her heart to the Lord and united with the Methodist Church. Her life was one of faithful, devoted service to the Master that she might honor Him, bless others in this life, and wear the crown, which now adorns her brow. She was the mother of eleven children, two of whom welcomed her to her heavenly home. Nine still live to cherish her sainted memory, viz: H. B. Dines, of Quincy, Ill.; Mrs. D. H. Pritchard, of Shelbina, Mo.; Mrs. J. W. Hersey, of Chicago; Mrs. Clay Balthrope and John W. Dines, of Kansas; Mrs. John W. Freeman, of Oklahoma; J. T. Dines, of Shelby county, Mo.; Miss Ida M. Dines, of Chicago and Mrs. Edgar Taylor, of Shelby county, Mo. She is also survived by thirty grandchildren and a host of friends. Our dear mother, who loved us as only a mother could love--Our dearest and best friend--has crossed the river and joined our father, brothers, our children and other loved ones to be "Forever with the Lord." "Father and mother safe in the vale, Watch for the boat man, waiting for the sail,' Bearing the loved ones over the tide. Into the harbor, near to their side. Brothers and children gone to that clime, Wait for others, coming some time, Safe with the angels, whiter than snow, Watching for dear ones waiting below." H. H. D.
