Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~ OBITUARY: "John Wesley Dines was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, Feb. 11, 1819, and died near Shelbyville, Mo., May 29, 1894 at the age of 75 years, three months and 17 days; his death having been caused by the running away of his horse while going from Shelbyville to his home, about 4 o'clock in the afternoon of that day. His wife, who was riding with him, was thrown, or jumped from the vehicle and thus escaped being killed. "Deceased spent his boyhood days in Maryland, coming to Shelbyville, Mo., in the year 1837 with his father, William Dines and family. He was married to Miss Nancy Murphy, in Clark county, Mo. March 7, 1843, with whom he continued to live happily until his death. There was born to them during their married life, five sons and six daughters, the eldest of them being H. Bascom Dines, now of Quincy; the other sons living are John W. and J. Tyson Dines, living near Shelbyville. Two sons proceeded their father to the life beyond, William R. and Joseph C. All of the six daughters survive their father; four of them living in the vicinity of Shelbyville, viz: -- Mrs. D.B. Pritchard, Mrs. John W. Freeman, Mrs. Edgar Taylor and Miss Lin Dines, who resides with her widowed mother. Mrs. John W. Hersey lives in Chicago, and Mrs. Clay Balthrope in Vernon county, Mo. All of his children are professed Christians and are members of the church. "When 19 years, deceased was converted and joined the Methodist church, and from that time to the close of his early life was a devoted christian man; always taking an active part in the work of the church. He was licensed as a local preacher in 1853 while living in Clark county, Mo. and did much effective work in the exercises of his talent as a minister of Christ. He was a very conscientious man, and when he made up his mind that he was right on any moral or religious question he was as firm as rock. His honesty and integrity were always beyond question. His word was as good as his bond. "Deceased spent the first year of his married life near Newark, Knox county, Mo. removing from there to Clark county, in the same state, where he lived on a farm until 1857, when he came to Shelby county and settled on the farm near Shelbyville, which was his homestead the balance of his life. His death was a great shock to a host of friends who loved and respected him, and it is sad bereavement to his devoted wife and children, who have in his death, lost a kind and loving husband and father. "His work is finished. He is forever at rest. May we who are left behind so live and work for the Master, whom our sainted father loved, that we may form an unbroken family in that beautiful land of rest, is the earnest prayer of . . . .
