Description	:	Ned Kirkpatrick Accidentally Killed Another exceedingly sad accident occurred last Friday afternoon about 3:30, near Fox Island, on the Des Moines river, when Ned Kirkpatrick was accidentally shot and killed by his boyhood friend Hadley Waltman. Read More	Ned Kirkpatrick Accidentally Killed Another exceedingly sad accident occurred last Friday afternoon about 3:30, near Fox Island, on the Des Moines river, when Ned Kirkpatrick was accidentally shot and killed by his boyhood friend Hadley Waltman. Ned and Hadley with John Gilchrist had been camping during the week at Fox Island, which is the property of Hadley's father, Fred Waltman. On Friday afternoon Ned and Hadley were on the mainland with an automatic 22 caliber revolver shooting at different objects. In some way the revolver was passed by Ned to Hadley to reload or a cartridge was fast in the magazine, but while in the hands of Hadley it was accidentally discharged, the ball striking Ned under the left shoulder blade and penetrated the heart. He walked a few steps and fell dead. John Gilchrist with his friend Miss Eldena Warner, were in a boat on the river near by and being called by Hadley rushed to the shore. They picked up Ned and carried him to the boat and he was taken down the river to the Anderson residence, north of Keosauqua. Dr. Russell was called, but said that Ned had lived but a few minutes after the accident. Ned was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Hira Kirkpatrick, nearly sixteen years of age, and was a member of the Freshman class in the high school. He was a very popular boy among his boyhood friends and agreeable in every way, and a member of the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Edith and Grace, both students in Parsons College. This is a very sad accident, and both the Kirkpatrick and Waltman families have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in this vicinity. -------------------------------------- Obituary of Ned Kirkpatrick. Ned Farrell, son of Hiram B. and Kate Kirkpatrick, was born in Birmingham, Iowa, on May 13, 1909, and passed away on May 30, 1924, aged 15 years and 17 days. His death was the result of an accident which occurred at 3:30 on the afternoon of Memorial Day. Ned has just completed work in the Freshman class of the local high school and would have been a Sophomore the next school year. He was a member of Ezra William's class in the M.E. Sunday school. He leaves to mourn his loss his loving father and mother, two sisters, Edith and Grace; his grandmother Mrs. Kirkpatrick in California, and a number of uncles and aunts and cousins, and a host of boyhood friends. No time for a last farewell, No time for the shock of fear, Scarcely a moment's halt on the shore, With the guide and the boatman near- Dear, how surprised you were to go. With little to suffer, little to know. Only a moment of dark, A dream of the fleeting night, And then the beaurtiful break of day And the quiet peace of light; And you found yourself where you longed to stand In the repose of the fatherland. Funeral services were conducted in the home by the Rev. G.H. Smith on Sunday afternoon, June 1st. Appropriate songs were sung by Mesdames Angle and Williams while Mrs. Daley presided at the piano. The floral remembrance were protuse and very beautiful. In the neighborhood of over six hundred people attended the services.
