Description	:	Mr. Niels Hansen of Vermillion, Clay Co., S.D., one of the old settlers of this county, passed quietly away at his home in this city on Thursday morning at 8:40 o'clock, Nov. 10, 1904. Read More	Mr. Niels Hansen of Vermillion, Clay Co., S.D., one of the old settlers of this county, passed quietly away at his home in this city on Thursday morning at 8:40 o'clock, Nov. 10, 1904. The deceased was born in Denmark, October 4, 1842, and was married to Miss Anna K. Sorensen, April 5, 1863, in his native country, and together they left Old Denmark in May of the same year and came to Waupaca, Wis., about June 5. Upon their arrival in this country Mr. Hansen hired out to a farmer for about five months, and when winter came on he went into the pineries where he engaged in lumbering during the season. In the spring of 1864 he removed his family to Winnebago county, in the same State, where he rented a farm, but longing for the West, he again started in the fall and came to Chicago where he found work in a packing-house for about a year; but, not being yet satisfied, and bent on pushing farther west, he came to Grinnell, Iowa, about Sept. 1, 1865, where he worked at various occupations and in different counties until the spring of 1869 when he again started westward and came to Clay County, Dakota Territory, where he accepted one of Uncle Sam's great gifts in the shape of 160 acres of land of Clay County's fertile soil in Sec. 25, Garfield Tp. Being one of the first settlers and knowing the value of education, he took an active part in organizing what is now known as Rockfield School District and was elected its first director. In politics he was also active. He was twice elected a delegate to Territorial Republican conventions, and later on was elected County Commissioner for a term of three years. At the time of his death he was generally known as the fruit-man of Clay County, having the best apple orchard in the county and perhaps the second best in this State, with about 500 large apple trees of forty different varieties, besides many plums and smaller fruits. He had made horticulture his great study for many years. In 1899 Mr. Hansen purchased a fine residence in the city of Vermillion where he moved his family in the fall, having previous to that time purchased 120 acres of land adjoining his homestead. Although a bonafide American citizen, he always longed to once more see his fatherland, and in May last left Vermillion with the intention of being gone about four months on a visit to Old Denmark in the hope of coming back in good health and spirits and with correct views and ideas after forty-one years of absence from the old country; but God willed otherwise, and after two months of pleasant visit Mr. Hansen was taken with the ague, and finding the disease gaining on him he went to a hospital in Copenhagen and there fought the malady for four weeks, but still growing weaker every day, he concluded to return to America, his adopted country, in hopes of here regaining his health,--but no, this was not to be, and after two weeks and three days of suffering a dear husband, loving father, honest and upright neighbor and citizen has gone from our midst--his always cheerful greeting will be realized no more. The deceased leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss; of the latter eight are married, five living in Clay Co., two in Miner Co., one in Omaha, Neb., and one in Ills. The funeral was held at the Norwegian Lutheran church on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the city of Vermillion, and the remains were laid to rest in Rockfield Cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community goes out toward the bereaved wife and family in their great loss.
