In 1930 Nell, 44, is listed as head of household, the home valued at $8,000 is owned, and she has purchased a general store, as she is a retail merchant and employer. They have a radio at their home. Sister Mary L, 46, is at home, brother John, 30, is a laborer doing road work. The 1940 Census lists an education question. Both Mary and Nell completed four years of high school, John, the 8th grade. Nell and John have the same jobs, John drives a road grader. Both work 60 hours or more a week. Williamsburg , Iowa newspaper - April 18, 1963 Nell G Flanagan Dies at Age 77; In Store 38 Years -- Miss Nell G Flanagan, 77, a resident of this community for many years, died Wednesday night, April 10, after several years of failing health. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. J.J. Gaule officiating. Pallbearers were Paul McDonough, Earl O'Neal, Gus O'Donnell, Gus O'Donnell, Leo Driscoll, and Alfred McSwiggin. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery. The daughter of Fergus and Margaret Quinn Flanagan, she was born at Stuart. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1903, and attended Cedar Rapids Business College. She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper at the LL Shames and Henry Witt stores. In 1923, she with Molly Donohoe, opened the Fair Store which was then located on the west side of the square. About fifteen years ago the store was moved to the south side where the business was continued until 1961, when the two ladies sold their business and retired. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. Surviving are one brother John Flanagan; two sisters Mary and Mrs. Roy Beilstein; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.
