Clare neighborhood. He had been a resident of Nuckolls county (sic) since 1879. Mr. Conner was one of the few survivors in this vicinity of the Civil war (sic). He was the senior member of the Conner fife and drum corps, an organization well known throughout this section some years ago when it furnished martial music for all patriotic occasions. He was a member of Geo. H. Thomas Post, G.A.R. up until it was disbanded. Neri Coner (sic) was born September 25, 1846, in Noble county (sic), Ohio, and departed this life at the home of his son Vernon August 16, 1931, aged 82 years, 10 months and 21 days. When the boy was two years old, his father was murdered, so he never had the companionship of a father which may account for his enlistment in the Civil war (sic) at the age of fifteen years. After the tragedy that took his father, his mother married again. At eleven years he was confirmed and became a member of the Lutheran church. Then at fifteen he joined the state guards of Ohio, but because of his age he was made a drummer in which capacity he served for the last three years of the war. At the close of the war in 1866, having no home, he came west to Guthrie county (sic), Iowa, where three years later, October 11th, 1869, he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Moore who preceded him in death July 20th, 1924. To this union were born six children: Vergie Etta dying in infancy, and Edna Guthrie (sic) Robb whose death came after she had reared her family. The four children were survive are Mrs. Inez Elda Hull, Neri Vernon Conner and William Kyle Conner all of Nelson, and Mrs. Mary Effie Robb of Ashby, Nebr. He also leaves to mourn his departure, 26 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and one uncle, Levi Conner of Hampton, Iowa, who is now 86 years of age, and other relatives and many friends. In September, 1879, with his wife and three small children and a number of cattle he arrived in Nuckolls county (sic) in a covered wagon. Mrs. Hull with whom her father lived the last three years, well rememberes the journey as it was her lot to occasionally walk behind and drive the stock, as it was necessary for some one to do this all of the way. They first settled at Oak Grove, near the present site of Oak, finding their first home in the Thatcher dug out, where they lived through the first winter. In the spring they moved to the Jerry Smith dugout, where they resided a short time, then moving to the Delbert Childes dugout. While there he purchased a farm in Section 16 Town 2 Range 3 on which he built a frame house 14x18, hauling the lumber from Edgar. In 1882 he sold his place buying the present place of his residence northeast of Mt. Clare. He organized the first school district at Mt. Clare and built the first house there. He helped pioneer the Methodist church (sic) there and remained a faithful member of it until the time of his death. He was perhaps one of the best Bible students of the county, reading it through many times, studying it carefully and daily until his eye sight failed him a few months before his death. His illness lasted but a few days, during which time he prayed that God would take him, and exhorted with those around the blessedness of God's promises. Some time age he told us that he was ready and anxious to go, and that his only concern was that some of his children and other loved ones were not Christians. We believe in these lines he would yet speak: "Dear loved ones, I have gone home, My days on earth were done. I loved you each, and long have prayed, That Christ to you might come. All here is love and joy and peace, The half has not been told; Find Jesus at the mercy seat, And come within the fold." The funeral service was held at the Methodist church (sic) Tuesday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. W.B. Zimmerman conducting the same. Burial in Nelson cemetery (sic).
