NETTIE UMPHREY Nettie Cocherell was born to Alpheus and Louisa Ann Cocherell in Keosauqua, Iowa, October 12, 1870. She spent her youthful days at that place, and received her education in the Keosauqua schools and was married to Arthur J. Umphrey, April 10, 1895. Mrs. Umphrey slipped quietly from this life, at the home of her sister, Mrs. James Beck, on Thursday, April 1, 1948 after patiently suffering for many months from injuries sustained in a fall. After her marriage to Arthur J. Umphrey they moved to Bonaparte, Iowa, where they made their home for many years. A daughter, Lola Rena, was born to this union to bless their home. Mrs. Umphrey united with the Bonaparte Baptist Church, and was a faithful and willing participant in the activities of the church. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Bonaparte, and was affiliated with that order for 35 years. She was a good neighbor, and always lovingly assisted in caring for the sick when her help was needed. It mattered not whether it was day or night. She gladly lent her hand to add comfort to others. Mrs. Umphrey remarked at the beginning of her last illness, that having waited on so many others during serious illness, she was well aware that her earthly life would not tarry long. The words found in Proverbs 31:10 - "Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies?" seem to apply very fittingly to her life, as a devoted wife and mother, and a loving friend. During the last 20 years she lived in Texas, but some time after her fall, she was brought to Farmington, where she spent her last five months with her sister, Mrs. James Beck, who patiently cared for her, with the assistance of another sister, Mrs. Clara Parker. Her husband, Arthur J. Umphrey, preceded her in death on January 18, 1929, at White Deer, Texas. Her daughter, Mrs. Lola Rena Hawkins, died August 17, 1937, at Tulia, Texas. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Parker of Keosauqua, Iowa, and Mrs. James Beck of Farmington; one brother, Frank Cocherell of Farmington; besides several nieces and nephews, also cousins and friends. Funeral service were held in the home of her sister, Mrs. James Beck of Farmington, conducted by the Rev. Henry Olsen, pastor of the local Baptist Church on Saturday, April 3, 1948, at 2:00 p.m. Burial was in Purdom Cemetery at Keosauqua, Iowa.
